Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) currently has an exciting leadership opportunity for an Associate Medical Officer of Health (AMOH) to join a dynamic leadership team. Thunder Bay District Health Unit is a public health agency incorporated under Ontario’s Health Promotion and Protection Act and governed by the Board of Health for the District of Thunder Bay. It is one of twenty-nine (29) not-for-profit, publicly funded health agencies in Ontario.
Thunder Bay District Health Unit provides public health programs and services to approximately 153,000 people across a large geographic area of 235,000+ square kilometres. This includes 15 municipalities, 25 First Nations, and unorganized communities and areas across Thunder Bay District. Its main office is located in the City of Thunder Bay with branch offices in Geraldton, Marathon, Red Rock, Manitouwadge and Terrace Bay. The Health Unit works with individuals, families, coalitions and partner agencies to deliver public health programs and services geared toward people of all ages in a variety of settings including community spaces, health care settings, workplaces, daycare and educational settings, and homes.
As part of senior leadership of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, the AMOH works closely with the Medical Officer of Health in providing direction and support for a broad array of public health programs and services including infectious diseases, environmental health, chronic disease and injury prevention, and child and family health, in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS). With an understanding of a population health approach and community context, the AMOH supports the design and evaluation of programs and services to meet community and population needs, and recognizes and addresses public health issues, including emerging issues, in the catchment area.
The AMOH serves in diverse roles, applying expertise in public health and medicine to population health issues, and using excellent oral and written communication skills to engage internal and external stakeholders, including management and staff, the Board of Health, the public, and the media. The AMOH develops and supports partnerships with health and non-health sector stakeholders to advance public health and address community needs. The AMOH also helps to ensure the effective and efficient use of public health resources, including financial and human resources.
At the direction of the MOH, the AMOH may also take on specific work or projects, such as participating in First Nations or other specific populations public health initiatives, serving on provincial committees, and being involved in programming at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM).
The successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and and be in good standing with the CPSO.The successful applicant will also have completed further training in public health, with a fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (community medicine), or a Master of Public Health degree or equivalent, from a recognized university, in accordance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act, and Ontario Regulation 566. The successful applicant will also have the ability to lead and engage others within an interdisciplinary team environment and work collaboratively with other health disciplines and community-based service providers. The ability to think strategically in developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to public health issues and demonstrate cultural competency and experience in applying a culturally safe approach to working with Indigenous people, organizations and populations will be expected.
