Health Sciences North (HSN) is an academic health science center proudly affiliated with Laurentian University and its Northern Ontario School of Medicine, HSN ranks among Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals and in the top 10% of 680 North American hospitals participating in the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®). It is the home of CIHR’s Institute of Aboriginal People’s Health (IAPH) led by Scientific Director, Dr. Carrie Bourassa. HSN’s main site is located in the vibrant and growing City of Greater Sudbury (population 165,000), a bilingual community with 330 lakes only four hours north of Toronto.
As the tertiary care centre for Northeastern Ontario’s population of 548,000, HSN offers a variety of programs and services that meet many patient care needs, including the provision of world-class care in areas such as cancer, neuroscience and vascular surgery, and leading regional programs in the areas of cardiac care, oncology, nephrology, trauma, and rehabilitation.
Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) is the affiliated research institute of Health Sciences North. Its purpose is to contribute to sustainable solutions for health challenges faced by the people and communities of north eastern Ontario. A significant foundational driver of HSN’s Strategic Plan includes advanced research and education. HSN’s research mandate will lead an exciting evolutionary change for northern Ontario over the coming years.
HSNRI was designed to bring together researchers, clinicians, regional partners, and industries with a focus on the health priorities of the north. HSNRI is an integral component to build “a culture of academic engagement that attracts and retains top talent in the North” and “adding knowledge to the global community that will change how healthcare is designed and delivered.”
