Job Description
The Registered Nurse (RN) is a regulated health care professional who is accountable and responsible for providing quality patient focused nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department. As part of the inter-professional health care team, the RN will practice according to the nursing practice expectations set by Osler, the regulatory practice standards of the College of Nurses and the legislative requirements set by the Regulated Health Professions Act.

Safe nursing practice in all aspects of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care
Compliance with policies and procedures associated with observations

Providing care in a compassionate and caring manner within a diverse cultural environment
Practicing according to the infection control and prevention measures

Qualifications

The Registered Nurse, BC Children’s Mental Health supports all aspects of therapeutic care of patients with behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric presentations and their families/caregivers. Provides and coordinates nursing care services such as patient assessment, patient and family teaching, and health promotion activities for mental health patients and their families, consistent with established policies, standards of practice and philosophy of the BC Children’s Mental Health Program.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency (CAPE)
A six-bed unit providing emergency psychiatric assessments and stabilization for children and adolescents in crisis up to and including the age of 16 years. CAPE is a short-term stay unit with an average stay of three to five days.
Child Psychiatry Inpatient Unit
A 10-bed unit that provides inpatient psychiatric services to children under 12 years old from mainland BC and the Yukon. Children are generally admitted to the Child Psychiatry program through a planned admission process.
Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program for Children & Adolescents
Providing care including supportive counseling to patients and their families, life-skills teaching to patients, teaching and providing meal support therapy to patients, friends and families and professionals in the community, advocating for patients, and medical monitoring.
Adolescent Psychiatry
A 10-bed unit providing psychiatric assessments and treatment for adolescents. The average length of stay is four weeks. Adolescents are generally admitted to the program through a planned admission process.

What you’ll do
Maintain patient records by performing activities such as collecting and documenting information including health care information regarding patients and their families, nursing observations, telephone communications, interventions, teaching and care evaluations to ensure that patient records are current and complete.
Plan direct care for the patient by performing activities such as reviewing patient/family history, developing a care plan specific for the patient and family, and meeting with other members of the health care team to discuss and review the care plan.

The Registered Nurse, BC Children’s Mental Health supports all aspects of therapeutic care of patients with behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric presentations and their families/caregivers. Provides and coordinates nursing care services such as patient assessment, patient and family teaching, and health promotion activities for mental health patients and their families, consistent with established policies, standards of practice and philosophy of the BC Children’s Mental Health Program.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency (CAPE)
A six-bed unit providing emergency psychiatric assessments and stabilization for children and adolescents in crisis up to and including the age of 16 years. CAPE is a short-term stay unit with an average stay of three to five days.
Child Psychiatry Inpatient Unit
A 10-bed unit that provides inpatient psychiatric services to children under 12 years old from mainland BC and the Yukon. Children are generally admitted to the Child Psychiatry program through a planned admission process.
Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program for Children & Adolescents
Providing care including supportive counseling to patients and their families, life-skills teaching to patients, teaching and providing meal support therapy to patients, friends and families and professionals in the community, advocating for patients, and medical monitoring.
Adolescent Psychiatry
A 10-bed unit providing psychiatric assessments and treatment for adolescents. The average length of stay is four weeks. Adolescents are generally admitted to the program through a planned admission process.

What you’ll do
Maintain patient records by performing activities such as collecting and documenting information including health care information regarding patients and their families, nursing observations, telephone communications, interventions, teaching and care evaluations to ensure that patient records are current and complete.
Plan direct care for the patient by performing activities such as reviewing patient/family history, developing a care plan specific for the patient and family, and meeting with other members of the health care team to discuss and review the care plan.
Provide direct patient care and support, including physical, psychiatric and meal support, to patients in accordance with operational policy and standards specific to the service area. Collaborate with other members of the health care team to evaluate patient care.
Teach by providing and explaining information, demonstrating procedures and use of equipment, checking the learner’s use of procedures, techniques and equipment and evaluating the effectiveness of the selected teaching methods.
Identify own learning needs, reviews these with the Program Director, or delegate, and engage in a variety of activities to meet these needs.
Participate in the orientation and continuing education of staff and students by preceptoring and role-modelling.
Act as a clinical resource/support person to patients and families and nursing and health care professionals by explaining the theoretical rationale for nursing decisions.
Participate as a member of the health care team through contributing information in rounds, committees, and staff meetings.

What you’ll do
Provide direct health care services to clients presenting with a wide variety and complexity of illnesses/diseases including communicable diseases, addictions, mental health and general health issues. Perform physical, addiction and psychiatric assessments, collect specimens, refer clients to the physician for further examination, administer prescribed treatments and medications according to protocols and make appropriate adjustments.
Observe, monitor, evaluate and document client progress, symptoms, and behavioral changes and performs a variety of health care interventions utilizing nursing skills and medical equipment including therapeutic interventions using a variety of modalities. Initiate and facilitate discharge planning; identifies referrals to other health professionals.
Using the nursing process and BCCNM standards of nursing practice provides care services such as maternal, fetal/newborn/infant assessment and administration of ordered drugs and therapy. Cerate a therapeutic environment by providing teaching and counseling.
Conduct initial and ongoing comprehensive nursing assessments of assigned patients, including ante partum and postpartum women and newborns.
Closely monitor and document physical/emotional condition of the mother/fetus throughout all stages of detoxification and stabilization.
Monitor infants for signs of withdrawal and/or other deviations from the expected norm.
Provide care and support to:
o Chemically dependent women.
o Mother/infant dyads during the early postpartum period, caring for the infant at the bedside (whenever possible), aiding the mother in watching for signs and symptoms of withdrawal.
o Substance exposed babies in the nursery.
o Babies requiring additional observation for reasons of medical instability.
o Babies awaiting placement.
Plan and coordinate in-hospital services required by the patient and her family, by referring to dietary services, physiotherapy, social work, life skills counseling, child life and/or lactation consultants.
Develop a comprehensive care plan with the multidisciplinary team, focusing on identified addiction, biopsycho-social/spiritual challenges and discharge planning. Evaluate the outcome of care provided and modify plan accordingly.
Provide education and support to clients, families and groups using a health promotion approach regarding matters such as pregnancy, the birth experience, postpartum, newborn care and parenting, contraception, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and minor dermatology problems. Also provides counseling on reduction of risk behaviours which can result in infants being born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) or fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
Prepare women and their families for discharge from hospital. Refers patients to Community Services as necessary. Liaise with the Ministry for Children & Family Development regarding discharge planning for the women and their infants, as required.
Initiate emergency care for the women/fetus/newborn in crisis by following escalation of care protocols including potential transfer to a higher level of care such as labour and delivery, high acuity unit (HAU) or Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NICU) as per protocol. Obtain immediate assistance from relevant resources, such as Physician/Midwife/Nurse Practitioner, Patient Care Coordinator, Unit Perinatal Clinical Educator, Program Director and other team members as indicated.
Contribute to a learning environment by preceptoring new orientees and nursing and other students and by supporting research endeavours in this specialty area.
Take responsibility for personal and professional development and provides a nursing perspective by attending multi-disciplinary/nursing in-services, rounds, conferences and committee meetings.
Other related duties as required.

What you’ll do
Provide direct health care services to clients presenting with a wide variety and complexity of illnesses/diseases including communicable diseases, addictions, mental health and general health issues. Perform physical, addiction and psychiatric assessments, collect specimens, refer clients to the physician for further examination, administer prescribed treatments and medications according to protocols and make appropriate adjustments.
Observe, monitor, evaluate and document client progress, symptoms, and behavioral changes and performs a variety of health care interventions utilizing nursing skills and medical equipment including therapeutic interventions using a variety of modalities. Initiate and facilitate discharge planning; identifies referrals to other health professionals.
Using the nursing process and BCCNM standards of nursing practice provides care services such as maternal, fetal/newborn/infant assessment and administration of ordered drugs and therapy. Cerate a therapeutic environment by providing teaching and counseling.
Conduct initial and ongoing comprehensive nursing assessments of assigned patients, including ante partum and postpartum women and newborns.
Closely monitor and document physical/emotional condition of the mother/fetus throughout all stages of detoxification and stabilization.
Monitor infants for signs of withdrawal and/or other deviations from the expected norm.
Provide care and support to:
o Chemically dependent women.
o Mother/infant dyads during the early postpartum period, caring for the infant at the bedside (whenever possible), aiding the mother in watching for signs and symptoms of withdrawal.
o Substance exposed babies in the nursery.
o Babies requiring additional observation for reasons of medical instability.
o Babies awaiting placement.
Plan and coordinate in-hospital services required by the patient and her family, by referring to dietary services, physiotherapy, social work, life skills counseling, child life and/or lactation consultants.
Develop a comprehensive care plan with the multidisciplinary team, focusing on identified addiction, biopsycho-social/spiritual challenges and discharge planning. Evaluate the outcome of care provided and modify plan accordingly.
Provide education and support to clients, families and groups using a health promotion approach regarding matters such as pregnancy, the birth experience, postpartum, newborn care and parenting, contraception, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and minor dermatology problems. Also provides counseling on reduction of risk behaviours which can result in infants being born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) or fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
Prepare women and their families for discharge from hospital. Refers patients to Community Services as necessary. Liaise with the Ministry for Children & Family Development regarding discharge planning for the women and their infants, as required.
Initiate emergency care for the women/fetus/newborn in crisis by following escalation of care protocols including potential transfer to a higher level of care such as labour and delivery, high acuity unit (HAU) or Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NICU) as per protocol. Obtain immediate assistance from relevant resources, such as Physician/Midwife/Nurse Practitioner, Patient Care Coordinator, Unit Perinatal Clinical Educator, Program Director and other team members as indicated.
Contribute to a learning environment by preceptoring new orientees and nursing and other students and by supporting research endeavours in this specialty area.
Take responsibility for personal and professional development and provides a nursing perspective by attending multi-disciplinary/nursing in-services, rounds, conferences and committee meetings.
Other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN or RPN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Two (2) years’ recent experience providing acute or community health nursing care/services to clients who have concurrent psychiatric and/or substance abuse/misuse disorders including one (1) year perinatal and nursery nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Current CPR/Newborn Resuscitation Certification.
Breastfeeding update, minimum 6 hours, in the last two years.
Fetal Health Assessment Certificate.
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.

Reporting to the Director Health Programs; the Supervisor Health Programs (SHP) provides leadership, direction, and support to all Health Centre employees. The SHP works with Community Health Nurses (CHNs), community health representatives and other health care professionals to provide health services to all community clients in accordance with established standards of nursing practice and the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Health. Incumbents who are hired as Nurse Practitioners (NPs) will provide clinical support and guidance to CHNs and our health care team in keeping with their education preparation and NPs scope of practice.
This is the senior position in the health centre, which has responsibility for managing and providing direct clinical and administrative supervision and training for CHNs and support staff. The SHP manages a significant budget during each fiscal year for the provision of comprehensive health services in the community. Operating within a defined budget, the SHP is required to use sound judgement in allocating funds in the most appropriate manner. The SHP supports the provision of quality community health programming.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are typically acquired through a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma along with five (5) years of nursing experience with a minimum of one (1) year of northern nursing, and two (2) years supervisory experience. You must be licensed and in good standing with CANNN. NPs must have completed a Primary Health Care NP or Adult/Family All-Ages certification. First Aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support certification with annual renewal is also essential.

Reporting to the Director Health Programs; the Supervisor Health Programs (SHP) provides leadership, direction, and support to all Health Centre employees. The SHP works with Community Health Nurses (CHNs), community health representatives and other health care professionals to provide health services to all community clients in accordance with established standards of nursing practice and the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Health. Incumbents who are hired as Nurse Practitioners (NPs) will provide clinical support and guidance to CHNs and our health care team in keeping with their education preparation and NPs scope of practice.
This is the senior position in the health centre, which has responsibility for managing and providing direct clinical and administrative supervision and training for CHNs and support staff. The SHP manages a significant budget during each fiscal year for the provision of comprehensive health services in the community. The Community Health Nurse (CHN) assists clients in promotion, protection and restoration of health, to educate about, prevent and reduce the incidence of disease, disability and death. Description The Integrated Forensic Program delivers specialized mental health care for individuals with mental illnesses who have come into contact with the criminal justice system or who are at risk of doing so. We provide assessment and treatment services to improve our clients' mental health and reduce their risk of re-offending. Our Brockville site offers 2 primary programs within the Integrated Forensic Program - a Secure Treatment Unit (STU) and a Forensic Treatment Unit (FTU).
The Secure Treatment Unit (STU): The St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre-Secure Treatment Unit is a 100-bed hybrid correctional facility and mental health centre located on the same campus of the Brockville Mental Health Centre. This facility serves 25 other provincial correctional facilities from across Ontario, and provides comprehensive mental health and criminogenic needs assessments, treatment and discharge planning services for seriously mentally ill adult male offenders serving a provincial sentence (less than two years). The Secure Treatment Unit is the result of a contractual arrangement between the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group and the Ministry of the Solicitor General. Integrated Forensic Program staff are responsible for the assessment, treatment and day to day supervision of residents while the Ministry of the Solicitor General staff are responsible for security and the overall operation of the building. The Secure Treatment Unit is designed to be more like a hospital than prison like and the health care staffing model is similar to that seen in other academic mental health science centres around the province such that the facility is designated as a schedule 1 mental health centre by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. The Forensic Treatment Unit (FTU): The Forensic Treatment Unit provides secure inpatient and outpatient services to individuals under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Review Board (ORB). This includes people found Not Criminally Responsible or not fit to stand trial. We follow a recovery-focused model of care to help clients with their rehabilitation and to achieve their goals and potential. The treatment team works with each client to create an individualized treatment and reintegration plan within the limits set out by their ORB disposition. As part of the treatment plan, clients may access a variety of individual services and group programming. Our clinical and administrative teams continually monitor clients' health and assess their risk for re-offending in order to protect public and client safety while supporting recovery. Job Description: The Royal is currently seeking Registered Practical Nurses (RPN). The RPN will have a sound knowledge of clinical issues in the area of mental health and addiction. Responsibilities include the provision of supportive nursing care consistent with patient treatment/rehabilitation needs and goals. In doing so, the RPN will assist in the assessment of patients' needs and in the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing care plans for assigned patients in collaboration and consultation with members of the inter-disciplinary team. The RPN will also provide a safe, therapeutic environment including crisis management and emergency nursing care.
Qualifications:
Graduate of a recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing;
Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Previous nursing experience working in psychiatric/mental health specialization is preferred.
Certified in CPR and First Aid
Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Substitute Decision Act.
Safety and Security in the Workplace Training (candidate must agree to complete prior to start date if this qualification is not met).
Valid drivers' license, if required.
