The Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario (AFHTO) works to support the implementation and growth of team-based primary care by promoting best practices, sharing lessons learned, and advocating on behalf of all primary care teams. AFHTO is a not-for-profit association representing primary care teams in Ontario, which include 191 teams, including 186 Family Health Teams and other team-based care models that provide comprehensive primary care to more than 3.5 million Ontarians in over 200 communities across the province. AFHTO is seeking a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Reporting directly to the AFHTO Board of Directors, the CEO will provide the strategic and organizational leadership to ensure that AFHTO develops, aligns and then executes its strategic direction and priorities. They will also be the advocate, champion and resource for special projects, programs and government relations that are focused on helping all Ontarians have timely access to high quality and comprehensive team-based primary care. The CEO will maintain a constant focus on continuing improvement, and operational planning to build, lead and support a strong team and sense of collaboration within the organization. 

The new Chief Executive Officer will join AFHTO at a pivotal time. In the coming weeks, the 2024-2027 strategic plan will be finalized and presented to the Board for approval. The plan was developed during a time of significant change and transformation, and outlines the unique opportunity for primary care and team-based primary care to be at the centre of the healthcare system, now and in the future. The CEO will be the champion and enabler of this new strategic plan and in meeting the needs of the association’s members as they deliver on their key mandates.    

The Chief Executive Officer will possess post graduate education in a related area of study and a minimum of 10 years of demonstrated leadership experience in the non-profit sector. The ideal candidate should have experience within an organization that focuses on external advocacy, government relations, and program delivery. Experience leading a members-based organization would be an asset. The CEO will have a strong understanding of governance, ideally having supported or directly reported to a skills based not-for-profit board of directors. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in strategic and organizational leadership, financial and human resources, continuous improvement and operational planning and will possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills. The CEO will have the flexibility to move from strategic to tactical thinking, with a focus on execution. The organization’s new leader will be a visionary who leads by example and serves as an effective coach and mentor to the team.  The CEO will possess a commitment to building and leading in a culture of accountability, collaboration, transparency, equity, and member service-orientation.
