Unit Summary
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonates and their families and serving a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.
Position Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) will work under the direct supervision of an immediately available Neonatal Intensive Care Physician within a multidisciplinary team in an academic Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, and will also identify patients with acute clinical issues common to NICU and work within the multidisciplinary team to appropriately manage patient care. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services in accordance with privileges granted via a medical directive, request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated, order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Qualifications - External
Graduate of Physician Assistant Program
• Prior experience in a Critical Care setting an asset
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions in times of emergencies
• Demonstrated ability to work alongside Intensivists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and other Health Care Professionals
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to promote professional development
• Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills
• Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care
• Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization
