During this workshop, candidates will learn SickKids' core values and approach to care, as well as interviewing best practices to engage in before, during, and after the interview. Through a panel discussion and question-and-answer period, our nurses will share their stories and advice for working at SickKids.

5A is a 25-bed unit within the surgical program. We provide specialized post-operative care to orthopaedic and otolaryngology patients . 5A is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team that exemplifies what teamwork really is. As a team member, your orientation includes paediatric and surgical education, combined with a preceptorship experience. Ongoing educational opportunities are always available to you. As your career advances, 5A offers many opportunities to grow and advance in your role.
Join a collaborative and supportive interprofessional team in a highly specialized, high-traffic, acute area of the hospital. As a valued team member of the world-renowned surgical program, you will provide strengths-based, family-centred care for patients undergoing life-changing, innovative surgical procedures. Meet some of the amazing surgical nurses!
Nurses working in surgical inpatient units (Units 5A, 5B, 8C) will learn and develop a valued skillset foundational to practice in acute care clinical settings, including:
Management of care across the phases of pre-operative, post-operative, trauma, acute and chronic care
Navigation of psychosocial dynamics and care challenges related to life-threatening illness or injury and its treatment
Involvement and care of patients undergoing new and innovative procedures and care pathways
Manage and care for patients from diverse pathways, such as new NICU babies, stepdown ICU surgical patients, or short- stay turnaround surgical patients
Central Venous Access Device care, maintenance and troubleshooting
Administration of blood products, oxygen therapy, enteral and parenteral nutrition
Recognition and management of surgical complications and post- operative emergencies
Work in collaboration with a highly skilled interdisciplinary surgical team, including a robust surgical NP team for each surgical service
Develop surgical subspecialty skills related to any of our surgical services - Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology, General Surgery, Trauma, Burns, Plastics, Urology, Ophthalmology, and Gynecology
Work with the Acute Pain Service team to champion best practices in pain management
Be a valued team member for patients undergoing life altering/innovative surgical procedures

Here's What You'll Do
Develop and implement a nursing plan of care
Work in collaboration with the child/family and the interdisciplinary health care team
Maintain clinical competence and knowledge base through continued education and life-long learning
Utilize evidence-based practice as a base in the promotion of professional accountability
Provide safe, competent and ethical nursing care
Who You Are
Graduate of an approved Baccalaureate Nursing Program
Current registration as an RN with the College of Nurses of Ontario (General Class License)
Possess 1 + years of clinical nursing experience in an RN capacity
Previous work experience in paediatrics or experience working with children is a strong asset but not mandatory
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to use your critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork abilities
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusivity
*Candidates with less than 1 year of clinical RN experience are encouraged to apply to our New Graduate Nurse job opening.

Upon receiving a verbal offer, all successful nursing candidates will need to provide 2 supervisory reference who can speak to clinical experience.
