POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Patient Care & Chief Nurse Executive

Due to the promotion of the incumbent, we are seeking an Executive Director (ED), Patient Care, to oversee a diverse portfolio that includes the following programs: Critical Care, Cardiac, Surgery, Medical Device Reprocessing, Women’s Care, and Children’s.

The ED provides senior tactical and operational leadership through the Program Operational Directors and Program Medical Directors, driving organizational success, growth, and achievement of corporate, academic and program goals, including patient experience, staff engagement, fiscal sustainability and innovation at the front line

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES INCLUDE: 

  • Evidence Based Leadership & Management

Provides clear operational vision and leadership to an interdisciplinary team, driving high quality, patient & family centred care using evidence-based best practices, process improvement, Lean principles, innovation, partnerships, collaboration and creative problem-solving.

Makes decisions through conscientious, explicit and judicious use of the best available evidence from multiple sources, including systematically searching for and retrieving evidence/data, critically evaluating the relevance and accuracy of the evidence, incorporating the evidence in the decision-making process and evaluating the outcome of the decision taken.

Ensures the establishment, communication, monitoring and achievement of indicators that track program performance against accepted benchmarks/standards and externally driven targets, supporting corporate performance/scorecards.

  • Coaching and Mentoring

Responsible for identifying leadership talent, coaching and mentoring Program Directors in planning, developing, evaluating and continuously improving the operations/services within the portfolio, including quality, finances, team engagement and system effectiveness. Promotes and coaches for a culture of inclusion, inquiry and continuous improvement at the front line and in program leadership. Ensures that program leaders make decisions that, in addition to supporting program advancement, consider the corporate perspective and support organizational success

  • Quality of Care & Financial Sustainability

Assesses, evaluates, plans, implements, modifies and continually drives improvement in patient and family centred service delivery in a manner that is congruent with the different and unique Mission, Vision and Values of Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital. Works with the Program leadership teams to identify and develop new & innovative funding/revenue generation approaches/ opportunities and ongoing efficiencies to help realize program goals and organizational sustainability.

When suggesting significant program enhancements or organizational changes, develops comprehensive business cases or proposals that are presented internally and may be submitted to external regional or provincial agencies for funding support.

  • Regionalization

As needed/directed, assumes leadership roles in regional initiatives, working with our regional network of partners and beyond (regional and provincial partners). Participates in regional planning, development of regional initiatives that span the continuum of care, collaborates with regional partner to identify opportunities for improvement in patient care and organizational/regional efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Academic Advancement

The ED supports the academic goals of the organization through initiating, developing, promoting and facilitating innovation, teaching, publishing and communication of leading practices and Program evolution.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in health care discipline, business or related field

  • Member of a Regulated Health Care Profession preferred

  • Minimum of ten years of progressive leadership experience in complex health care environments, with broad understanding of issues related to nursing professional practice, interprofessional collaboration and leading/managing in a highly unionized environment

  • Broad knowledge and experience with hospitals, health care organizations, health systems, healthcare legislation, organizational culture & behaviour

  • Knowledge & active experience with evidence-based leadership & management, QI & change management principles and theories

  • Ability to think strategically at the organizational, program, unit and individual level

  • Highly developed critical thinking skills, systems thinking, ability to conceptualize and analyze problems, innovative approach to problem solving, and strong negotiation skills 

  • Demonstrated success in collaborating effectively and strengthening partnerships with diverse stakeholder groups

  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy with diverse groups of stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence individuals and teams within a large organization and in the context of major change, toward a vision while maintaining group cohesiveness, motivation, commitment and effectiveness

  • Demonstrated ability to create and support welcoming environment that promotes and embeds practices in equity, diversity and inclusion

  • Demonstrated person-centered attitude and commitment to the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of KHSC

  • Proficiency using word processing, communications/scheduling and spreadsheet applications, Microsoft Windows Office suite (including Outlook, Word and Excel) required

  • Successful criminal background check with vulnerable sector search
