Job Description

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has a mandate to provide every offender in Federal custody with essential healthcare and non-essential mental healthcare that will contribute to every offender’s rehabilitation and successful reintegration into the community. In 43 institutions located in five regions across Canada, over 1,150 CSC healthcare professionals respond to the health needs of offenders by providing high quality healthcare that meets professionally accepted standards and ensures patient safety.

Located in Ottawa and reporting to the Assistant Commissioner, Health Services, the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) provides oversight and leadership for the provision of healthcare across Canada and leads CSC’s National Medical Advisory Committee (NMAC). The NMAC is a constructive partnership representing CSC Primary Care Physicians, Psychiatrists, Dentists, Nurse Practitioners and senior administrative staff collaborating on the advancement of quality health services within CSC.

The CMOH works in close collaboration with these regional and national health services team members to support the provision of efficient and effective integrated person-centred care, identify healthcare priorities and issues of concern for CSC, and to promote ongoing collaboration with outside healthcare bodies, including public health agencies, ministries of health, local hospitals, etc.

As an ideal candidate, you are a physician holding a current license in good standing with one of the provincial licensing bodies for physicians and surgeons in Canada. You bring a minimum of 10 years of clinical experience including a track record of leadership at the minimum of a departmental level within a large community hospital or in an academic health sciences centre. CSC will benefit from your skill in chairing committees, boards or task forces and in your experience of regional collaboration and stakeholder engagement, ideally at the local, regional, provincial and national levels.

You are passionate about, and have deep experience in, quality, patient safety and professional conduct management. You are a proven change leader whose vision, forward thinking and bias to action are complimented by excellent inter-personal skills, conviction, and flexibility. You are highly respected by peers for your ability to negotiate, collaborate and build strong relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders while displaying the highest levels of ethics and integrity in everything you do.

A demonstration of additional professional development or leadership training (MHA, MBA, Canadian Society of Physician Leadership, etc.) is considered an asset and will be evaluated in the awarding of the contract, which will be 5 years in duration. The estimated level of effort for the CMOH is expected to be approximately 4 days per week. The CMOH must be able to exercise their duties, at least functionally, in both English and French.
