Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada (VLRC) is a national healthcare organization that provides professional, high quality and sustainable rehabilitation services to Canadians with vision loss. A sister organization to The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and Deaf Blind Community Services (DBCS), VLRC has begun a transformational journey, transitioning from being a central part of a national charity to a separate and distinct national health service provider. VLRC’s services are delivered across the country, with a staff of 270, 44 offices and a current budget of $28 million.

When someone loses their vision, it can feel like their whole life has been turned upside down. Just imagine. Suddenly they have to navigate the world by touch, sound, taste and smell. They can no longer see the faces of their loved ones, and seemingly simple tasks like preparing a meal can become incredibly daunting.
While some people adapt to these changes, many more find themselves grappling with serious emotional challenges like isolation, anxiety and depression, as they mourn the loss of their sight – and the life they had before.
Thankfully, for every Canadian who faces these challenges, VLRC is here. The organization provides a wide range of services, delivered by certified professionals, which help people overcome the challenges of vision loss, build their independence, and achieve their goals in life – from mobility instruction to technology training, support for parents and loved ones, career counselling and much more. President and Chief Executive Officer
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will provide visionary leadership to VLRC in a period of significant organizational and system transformation, driven by fundamental changes to the mission and mandate of VLRC and amplified by the current system-wide changes as a result of COVID 19. As President & CEO you will strategically position VLRC to respond to, and capitalize on, these new developments.

As President & CEO of VLRC, you will lead a passionate and skilled team of professionals providing emotional support, programs and services which currently benefit 49,000 Canadians with vision loss. VLRC has the potential to reach many more. You will create brand awareness and visibility for VLRC and the critical work that it does. You will be a passionate advocate for increased government funding and equitable access to vision loss rehabilitation services across the country. You will inspire your team, the communities you serve, regional and provincial partners and the broader healthcare system. You will passionately advocate and influence a variety of government funders. You will continue to develop partnerships and innovative, integrated models of service delivery, including with the CNIB, while maintaining the highest quality of services in vision loss rehabilitation.
In your capacity as President & CEO you will provide leadership and oversight, and progress reporting to the Board, on the execution of the organization’s new strategic plan, “Aim Higher”. Leading by example, you will promote an inclusive culture focused on evidence-driven, quality, client-centred care. You will ensure that client experience is at the heart of every business decision. You will build a network of influence with potential funders and granting agencies that strengthens the long-term fiscal health and sustainability of the organization, working with community/regional partners and provincial funders to provide programs and services to those with vision loss.
Background and Skills
You are business-oriented and entrepreneurial by nature and excel at building relationships, both internally and externally. You have raised the profile of your current organization through high-level diplomacy, community and staff engagement and an innovative approach to program management and partnerships. You have established and grown secure and stable government funding. You have enabled high quality service delivery, continuity of care and connectivity to a broader system. You have inspired change and high performance in a collaborative client-centred culture. A variety of professional backgrounds will be considered. In-depth knowledge of the Canadian health landscape, as well as an understanding of how services are delivered in community settings would be an asset. A graduate level degree, and demonstrated commitment to learning, will complement your professional experience.
