Are you a Registered Nurse with a strong interest in providing a high standard of care to short stay surgical patients? Unit 24 at Red Deer Regional Hospital is a fast-paced, high turnover unit that is suitable for candidates who demonstrate a high level of independence, initiative, and particular attention to detail in providing patient and family centered care.
As the ideal candidate you have demonstrated excellent knowledge and skill in the preoperative and postoperative care of surgical patients. You will provide teaching and discharge planning for adult patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical procedures including; General surgery, Urology, Plastic surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, and Ear, Nose and Throat. To be successful your strong communication skills will support you in establishing effective and collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary team. You are competent in relevant technical nursing skills and are committed to continuous learning, you learn new skills as required, and take responsibility for your professional development. Unit 24 provides a supportive environment for both novice and experienced nurses.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Two (2) years’ within the last three (3) years’ acute care experience. Ability to meet the physical demands of the job including lifting and transferring of patients.
IV certification, demonstrated competence with PCA, VAC Dressings, Capnography Monitoring. Two (2) years’ within the last three (3) years’ short stay experience preferred. Charge nurse experience and leadership training are desirable. Certification in medical surgical nursing.
