Unit Summary

Pharmacy services encompasses both clinical and distributive activities to support the Medication Management System at Hamilton Health Sciences including 5 inpatient pharmacies, 3 retail pharmacies, a regional cancer centre, a drug information centre and clinical trial/drug research program. As an academic centre we support pharmacist, pharmacy resident and technician education, as well as other health disciplines. Our team consists of more than 300 staff who work in collaboration with our health care partners to provide safe and effective medication therapy.

Our Hospital provides services to adults and children across a spectrum of inpatient populations including hematology/oncology, stem cell transplantation, cardiac and vascular care, critical care, neurosciences and trauma, obstetrics, orthopedics, rehabilitation services. We service a regional cancer centre, pediatric and adult clinics as well as participate in research studies.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Clinical Support Services and Surgery, the Director of Pharmacy is accountable for providing a strategic vision and administrative leadership for a full range of pharmaceutical services. The Director of Pharmacy will be responsible for all organizational, clinical, operational and financial aspects related to Pharmacy. The incumbent will lead the development, implementation, optimization and evaluation of advanced clinical and operational pharmacy services promoting quality outcomes, as we continue to leverage technology in order to support the medication therapy management services.

The Director of Pharmacy is a member of the leadership team providing direction to a management team overseeing a broad range of pharmacy services including outpatient and inpatient pharmacy, pharmacy automation, drug information, medication procurement, clinical research, academia and pharmacy residency. The Director will assure all legal, regulatory and accrediting requirements are maintained in best practice, as well as maintain a professional presence through the hospital system and community. The Director will influence and advise various committees and stakeholders throughout the organization including Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Medication Safety, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Professional Practice. The Director will ensure advocacy for the advancement of the profession of pharmacy.

Qualifications 

    1. Must be licensed in Ontario with the College of Pharmacists
    2. Masters Degree in health care administration or Masters in Business Administration is an asset
    3. 5-7 years of progressively responsible related experience
    4. Thorough understanding of quality regulations, standards and processes.
    5. High level of independence required in handling operational issues and HR issues in consultation with HR Business Partners and IAVP as required.
    6. Strong Change Leadership and relationship building skills; track record as developer of high-performing teams
    7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    8. Demonstrated ability to deliver results, responsiveness and respect
    9. Demonstrated commitment to the values of Service, Responsible Stewardship, Community

Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
