Located on the shores of Georgian Bay in Penetanguishene, the hospital is home to the Waypoint Research Institute and also has the province's only high secure forensic mental health program for clients served by both the mental health and justice systems. We provide an extensive range of both acute and longer term psychiatric inpatient and outpatient services to Simcoe County, Muskoka, part of Dufferin County and the southern portion of Parry Sound. The hospital is recognized for the provision of exceptional care to those most needing mental health services and for its contributions to the understanding of mental illness. For additional information about Waypoint, including program descriptions, please visit our website at http://www.waypointcentre.ca/ The Vice-President of Research & Academics is currently seeking a Research Chair in Forensic Mental Health Science. The purpose of this position, under the administrative authority of the Waypoint Research Institute, is to design, plan, supervise, direct, and conduct a program of scientific research in a tertiary mental health specialty psychiatric hospital with a large high secure forensic unit, including the hospital’s outpatient and community services; to design, plan, supervise, coordinate and execute program evaluation projects; and to provide education and training to hospital staff providing direct care to persons with serious and complex mental disorders. Such research may include research involving forensic mental health patients, including violent and/or sex offenders. An important objective is to actively seek and acquire external funding for research projects and to plan and coordinate budgeting and supervise expenditures for funded research projects. Key Accountabilities: Develop an innovative and highly competitive independent forensic mental health research program that leverages external research grant funding in alignment with Waypoint’s Strategic Plan, directions and priorities; Plan and conduct research leading to innovation in the delivery of specialized forensic mental health care to both inpatients (secure and non-secure) as well as community-based forensic patients with the goal of advancing the hospital’s strategic vision of Serve, Lead, Discover; Writing and obtaining competitive research grants for external funding of research projects; supervising data collection by others (sometimes at multiple sites, agencies and locations); analyzing and interpreting data; and reporting findings in the scientific literature. Assuming responsibility for financial administration and supervision of the research grants as principal investigator including responsibility for budgets, expenditures, and personnel. Writing scientific articles for publication in the peer-reviewed literature; disseminating findings by presenting at academic conferences; explaining findings to members of the mass media; explaining findings and implications to government officials; consulting about research methods with management, other professionals, and members of the public. Recruit and mentor graduate students and other trainees and research staff; Promote collaboration with various stakeholders to leverage the strengths of Waypoint with an extensive external network; Engage staff to achieve tangible impact at Waypoint, build capacity, and strengthen the hospital’s culture of research and knowledge translation; Participate in committees, advisory groups, and other activities that further the objectives of Waypoint; Contribute to the faculty of the University of Toronto through teaching and mentorship of students in order to build an academic presence and meet academic requirements. Identify and adhere to safety and security procedures and be alert and respond to potentially unsafe/volatile situations. Requirements/Qualifications: PhD level training (or equivalent) in a health profession with a strong preference for forensic mental health research Faculty appointment with the University of Toronto at the level of Associate Professor or higher (to be obtained before or at offer of position) Demonstrated knowledge of highly unique scientific literature as it pertains to the etiology, assessment, measurement and treatment of individuals who are involved in the criminal justice system who have mental health concerns Demonstrated experience with advanced and broad-based experimental designs, quasi-experimental and other research methodologies and approaches Demonstrated knowledge of provincial/federal statutes relating to the assessment and treatment of mentally-disordered individuals, other forensic patients, and the evaluation of program effectiveness Proven strategic thinker with transformative leadership capabilities and strong collaboration skills A strong record of ongoing, consistent research funding from extramural sources and scholarship in the field, with the ability to cultivate the hospital and university’s research agendas; A record of applied research and demonstrated impact in a hospital or health system; accomplishments that warrant national and international recognition Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation), and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills How do I apply?
