Chief, Department of Psychiatry, Program Medical Director of Psychiatry, Michael Garron Hospital, Toronto East Health Network Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Department of Psychiatry and Program Medical Director of the Psychiatry Service (Chief) at Michael Garron Hospital, Toronto East Health Network, University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Nestled in the heart of East Toronto, Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), as a keystone of the Toronto East Health Network (TEHN), is a vibrant 450-bed community teaching hospital serving one of Canada’s most diverse communities. Since 1929, we have delivered high-quality, patient-centred healthcare services to more than 400,000 people in 22 distinct neighbourhoods. By late 2022, MGH will celebrate the opening of our new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre. This transformational project will forever change the hospital and the care it provides to our community in keeping our strategic vision to Create Health, Build Community . The Psychiatry Service supports the provision of care annually to 7000 in-patient admissions and 70,000 outpatient visits, in addition to consultative services to the Emergency Department and other in-patient Departments. The Department’s 180 non-medical staff (160 front-line clinicians) and 35 psychiatrists including 21 Active staff members, are dedicated to meeting the needs of our diverse community. We provide comprehensive service to the ED, inpatients and outpatients with over 10,000 visits annually. Building on our core strengths, the Department seeks a visionary, forward-thinking strategic leader who is a role model of an excellent practicing clinician and role model, and whose commitment to leadership is exemplified in their support and execution of the hospital’s larger strategic direction. This leader will be a strong collaborator, and have exceptional interpersonal skills to build and nurture relationships. They must be able to maintain a positive departmental culture, gain followership internally, and to build strong relationships with other departments, our Foundation and donors, the University, community partners and our Ontario Health Team. They will be the advocate for our department to external organizations for initiatives that extend beyond our walls. The next Chief of Psychiatry will be highly visible, creative and innovative, able to be an agent of change for new and expanding work. They will support the design and execution of models of care that meets the needs of our community, including improving access to care through integrated models with our community partners. Opportunities include growing our mental health program to address the needs of, seniors, those with substance use disorders, women during their reproductive life, concurrent disorders, and chronic diseases. The leader should be able to attract and retain excellent psychiatry health professionals, pursue data-driven ongoing quality improvement, and ensure the timely and high quality access to services for patients. The Chief should have a demonstrated history of innovation and positive impact, and be comfortable with change management in the context of the move to a new Tower and new Strategic Plan in 2023. Michael Garron Hospital is a member of East Toronto Health Partners, and values its engagement with community partners. As the only Acute Psychiatry Department in the East Toronto Health Partners, the Chief will be an important physician mental health leader in our Ontario Health Team, skilled in building coalitions, advancing integrated care, and shaping the future role of acute psychiatry in an integrated system. The Chief of Psychiatry will be dedicated to enhancing the Departmental academic mission in education, mentorship, professionalism, promotion, innovation, and clinical research, particularly with a view to joining the newly announced Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH). Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Vice-President Medical, and working in a highly collegial, productive and collaborative relationship with the Vice-President Clinical Program and administrative Program Director of the Psychiatry Service, this individual will be accountable for the quality of care and performance of the Department and the Program. The qualified applicant psychiatrist shall hold an FRCPC, be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, have three to five years of management or leadership experience, and be eligible for appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine.
