Chief of Surgery Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) is a full-service community teaching hospital serving the communities of Burlington, Hamilton, Oakville, Waterdown, Flamborough, Milton, Stoney Creek, and Halton Region with a skilled staff of 194 physicians, 1,911 full-and part-time staff and more than 700 volunteers. In conjunction with McMaster University, JBH is a Clinical Education Campus and is designated as an Academic Community Teaching Hospital. In 2018, JBH completed a $450M redevelopment project, featuring a new Emergency Department; 9 new Operating Rooms and a new post-anaesthetic care unit; an expanded Diagnostic Imaging Department; expanded medical, surgical and outpatient services; expanded Cancer Clinic; expanded Intensive Care Unit; expanded level 2b Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; an expanded and modernized laboratory; and 70% single-patient rooms. The Position The Chief of Surgery (Chief) will be responsible for the leadership of the Surgical Services Program, a complex and high functioning program providing excellent, safe, and evidence-based surgical care to Burlington and the surrounding areas. With the opening of the new tower in 2017, the state-of-the-art facility now boasts large cutting-edge operating rooms, an new post-anesthetic care unit (PACU) and expanded endoscopic and surgical services. This is a complex and broad portfolio that encompasses a comprehensive suite of services including: Community Level Procedures (Orthopedics, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Urology, Gynecology, Oral Surgery, ENT, Plastic Surgery, Simple Vascular); Ambulatory Care Clinics; Endoscopy; Day Surgery and PACU; Ambulatory Procedures Unit (9000 procedures a year); and 2 Inpatient Surgical Units (General Surgery and Orthopedics). The Surgical Department performs over 17,000 procedures annually. The Chief will work closely with the Program Leadership and the many dedicated clinicians, specialists and hospital team members, patients and families to provide high quality hospital and health services to patients and their families while actively promoting and continuing to advance best practices to deliver improved quality, access and sustainability. Key leadership priorities for the Chief of Surgery will be to: Lead clinical transformation and service innovation in the Surgical Services Program. Develop strategies and advance key deliverables for the Program as it relates to partnerships, service planning and clinical excellence. Influence the future vision of the Program by seeking out opportunities for program expansion and clinical partnerships to enhance the role of Surgical Services within the region. Develop and empower a high-performing team while fostering collaborative engagement, leadership development and mentorship. Optimize opportunities for leadership and improved health outcomes by actively seeking out new partnerships across a range of community and health service providers. Experience You are a physician licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or eligible for licensure, and hold certification in General Surgery or Orthopedic Surgery, or its equivalent, and/or other certification that is deemed to be equivalent, as recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. You are an experienced, inclusive and visionary leader with credentials in medical leadership, strategy and operations. Recognized as an effective change agent, you have demonstrated your commitment to improving service and operations in a clinical setting as well as participating in broader systems-level change.
