POSITION SUMMARY This position is a Unit Weekend Worker in accordance with Article 13.04 of the Central Collective Agreement. Reporting to the Clinical Manager of the Emergency Department, the Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for conducting emergency mental health assessments including but not limited to assessment of mental status indicators, multiple risk factors, symptom history, and presenting problems. This role requires independent skills at assessment and formulation of complex presenting problems and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team within the CHEO Emergency Department Team as well as with the CHEO Regional Psychiatric Emergency Services for Children and Youth (RPESCY). The nurse will also support triage nurses in the emergency room in the identification and appropriate streaming of patients presenting with mental health emergencies, and will be responsible for referrals to appropriate services for patients who are discharged. The nurse will support the admission process to inpatient psychiatry when the decision for disposition is an admission. The nurse collaborates with the patient, the family and team members to identify priorities for intervention and develop a plan for problem resolution. The nurse will also support the activities regarding the planning, implementation and activations of urgent care pathways with community partners. When not working with patients presenting with Mental Health Complaints, the RN will support Care for all Emergency Department Patients in collaboration with the ED Team through their own initiative and as directed by the Care Facilitator or Charge nurse. Duties may include ED assessment and intervention as outlined in ED nursing standards of practice. RESPONSABLITIES Conduct mental health assessments of those children/youth and their families who present to the CHEO Emergency Department in an acute psychiatric crisis. Liaise with the CHEO Emergency Department staff and psychiatry on-call services. Support triage nurses in the ED in the identification and appropriate streaming of patients presenting with mental health emergencies. Work in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team in the identification and referrals to appropriate resources upon discharge from the ED. Provide support in the planning, implementation and activation of Urgent Care Pathways with community partners. This will involve but not limited to carrying the urgent care pager and triaging cases after hours while providing consultation on local resources. Facilitate virtual mental health risk assessments as part of RPESCY. Participate in the implementation of the new ED/MH Model of Care. To work effectively within the ED nursing team to support Assessment and Intervention for ED patient population To support safe and effective flow of patients through the ED at all times To learn and remain up to date with ED nursing standards of care. QUALIFICATIONS Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential) Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Essential) Current CPR Certification (Essential) Current PALS certification or successful completion of PALS certification within 12 month (Essential) Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care (Essential) Minimum 2 years pediatric Emergency experience (Preferred) Experience with pediatric triage (Preferred) Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing (Preferred) Certificate in Mental Health Nursing (Preferred) Minimum of 2-5 years of previous psychiatric nursing experience (Essential) Excellent team work and interpersonal skills (Essential) Knowledge of mental health legislation, treatment modalities and experience with crisis intervention or other appropriate combinations of education and experience, along with the demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position, may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience. (Essential) Experience with Crisis Intervention (Essential) Demonstrated organizational, time management and coordination skills.
