Position Overview:
The MGH Emergency Department (ED) provides care for over 90,000 individuals annually and takes pride in serving East Toronto’s diverse population. The Psychiatric Emergency Zone (PEZ) of Michael Garron Hospital, located in the ED, is open 24/7 and provides highly specialized care to patients who present to hospital in crisis with mental health and substance use issues.
The RN provides comprehensive psychiatric nursing care to individuals across the developmental lifespan who present with acute mental health and substance use needs. The RN works within an interprofessional team environment in a dynamic setting, collaborating with diverse healthcare team members to conduct mental health and risk assessments, stabilization of patients, and support the development of disposition and care pathways. The role will also include providing the full scope of nursing care to patients. A commitment to sharing knowledge, supporting the growth of self and team and contributing to the advancement of nursing excellence is required. Ongoing professional development, through education, experience and reflective practice is essential to maintaining high standards of care within the RN role.
The RN is responsible for the provision of comprehensive psychiatric nursing care primarily in the PEZ and will provide consultation in the Emergency Department for patients presenting with mental health and substance use concerns. The RN may also be trained and expected to work in other mental health and substance use programs, based on operational needs.
Education:
- Registered Practical Nurse with current certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Registered Practical Nursing Diploma required.
- BLS Certification required.
- Completion of a mental health nursing course from accredited college, or a commitment to attend and complete the education within one year of hire.
Qualifications/Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years mental health and substance use nursing experience: either Inpatient, Outpatient, Community-Based, or a combination required.
- Demonstrated excellence in both psychiatric and medical nursing including assessment, intervention, and evaluation processes.
- Demonstrated excellent assessment, de-escalation and crisis intervention skills
- Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act
- Ability to articulate clearly the philosophy of patient-centered care, recovery, trauma-informed care and strength-based and harm reduction strategies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of counseling and therapeutic techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well within an interdisciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a rapidly changing environment
- Computer competency required.
- Maintains competence relative to current practice.
- Good work and attendance record required.
