Job Description

Executive Vice President, Patient Care and Chief Nursing Executive

In April 2017, Hotel Dieu Hospital (HDH) and Kingston General Hospital (KGH) joined together to create the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). KHSC, together with the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario and Kingston General Health Research Institute, is southeastern Ontario’s complex, acute, and specialty care, research and teaching hospital. This integration was the result of many years of collaboration between the two sites, and the establishment of a novel governance structure that enables site-specific approaches to both secular and catholic healthcare.

The Executive Vice President, Patient Care and Chief Nursing Executive will have an opportunity to join a dynamic, resilient, and committed Executive Team in an organization that provides exceptional system leadership and innovative regional clinical programs, with an exciting upcoming major capital expansion project.  With two main sites located in the vibrant downtown core near Kingston’s beautiful waterfront and Queen’s University, KHSC is founded on a legacy of compassion and partnership, steeped in history, and committed to excellence.

The Position

The Executive Vice President, Patient Care and Chief Nurse Executive (EVP/CNE), together with a highly qualified team of Executive Directors, Directors, and Managers, will provide the executive leadership for a range of clinical programs at KHSC. This is an extraordinary portfolio encompassing multiple clinical programs, and professional practice across all disciplines. The EVP/CNE will provide vision, strategy, and team-based leadership to ensure that KHSC continues to provide innovative, inspirational, and high-quality patient care programs and services across all inpatient, outpatient, and community-based services. The EVP/CNE will also play a key role, in partnership with the Executive Team and direct reports, in the areas of operational efficiency, business and clinical services planning, quality and risk management, financial and utilization management, infection prevention & control, and patient safety. The EVP/CNE will be accountable for fostering an environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care and professional development is promoted and achieved. Additionally, the EVP/CNE will play a key role in enabling better care integration with healthcare partners and providers across the continuum of care to ensure better coordination of care across the region.

Key leadership initiatives for the new EVP/CNE will be to:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Team, physicians, staff, patients and families, and partners, to lead, plan, and deliver healthcare services throughout post-pandemic recovery and into the future.
  • Support the organization in its achievement of key clinical, academic, and research milestones that drive a high performing, compassionate, caring, and innovative patient-focused culture.
  • Continue to advance an ambitious Strategic Plan by executing on deliverables that enhance clinical excellence, support teamwork, and collaborative/integrated models of care in a rapidly changing healthcare world.
  • Facilitate and strengthen KHSC’s relationship with its system partners to improve access, flow, and coordination of services, while continuing to advance partnership efforts and other integrated care initiatives.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of strategies that focus on optimizing operational performance, reinforcing fiscal accountability, and improving value for money.
  • Lead an integrated vision of collaborative practice, while providing leadership to professional practice, education, and future strategic directions.
  • Implement effective strategies aligned with organizational priorities that complement the operational agenda, while ensuring resources effectively meet demand.
