Board Members for the Board of Directors

Independent Living Waterloo Region (ILWR) is a nonprofit, community-based organization with a proud history of serving the Region since 1982.

Since March 24, 2021 ILWR has been under Supervision pursuant to the Local Health System Integration Act, 2006. A key role of the Supervisor, is to make changes and improvements to the organization including governance and management. Since March 24th significant progress has been made in stabilizing, building capacity, and addressing operational fundamentals. Although more work is required, the Supervisor is now at the point of initiating board recruitment with the goal of re-establishing local governance.

The Board will play fundamentally important roles that include:

  • Advancing the vision of ‘working together to achieve happiness through independence’ and the mission of ‘supporting independent living through service excellence and partnerships’;
  • Supporting the ongoing organizational transformation initiated under supervision and exploring innovative and creative approaches;
  • Responding to a constrained funding environment that necessitates the pursuit of alternative funding strategies and system efficiencies will need to be pursued; 
  • Navigating system reform that necessitates more effective care delivery models to improve the consumer experience, increase quality, and provide better value;
  • Exploring opportunities to improve efficiency and economies of scale through increased collaborations and integrations.

ILWR is seeking strategic, experienced, engaged and talented members of our community who understand the role of the Board and want to work with a like-minded group of volunteers in delivering on the vision and mission.

Our goal is to recruit a skills-based board and we are looking for candidates with experience in any one or more of the following disciplines including governance, government relations, education, finance, information technology, healthcare or social services, and human resources. In addition, ILWR is committed to providing an inclusive workplace environment and recognize that individuals from diverse backgrounds or those with lived experience of disability help strengthen our team.

What is expected?

Board members should expect to devote approximately 5 to 10 hours per month of their time to our business, to attend regular board and committee meetings and adhere to our board responsibilities and policies.
