Position Summary

In this key leadership role reporting to the Vice President Clinical Services, the Director, Surgical and Ambulatory Care Services will be accountable for the overall operations and service delivery of the Surgical and Ambulatory Services program, a multi-site, fast paced program with total procedure volumes of approximately 63,000 per year (28,000 surgery, of which 50% are unplanned, 21,500 endoscopy and 13,500 cystoscopy). Osler is home to 112 highly skilled and dedicated surgeons and the director, in collaboration with the Chiefs, plays a key role in ensuring they have the tools and resources they need. The Director’s portfolio includes a comprehensive suite of perioperative services encompassing thoracic, vascular, general, orthopedic, oral, ear, nose and throat, gynecology, ophthalmology, plastic, and urology surgeries, as well as a broad range of ambulatory services including endoscopy, cystoscopy and fracture clinics. Working in close partnership with the Chiefs of Surgery and Anesthesia, the Director oversees approximately 500 professionals across all three Osler sites, with a total annual budget of approximately $90M. The Director will provide overall accountability for all aspects of the program at BCH, EGH and PEEL which includes Surgical Clinics, Day Surgery, Operating Room, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, Endoscopy and Medical Device Reprocessing through a team of seven Clinical Services Managers, a Business Manager and the manager of MDRD.

The Director will play a key role as an influential expert liaising with the clinical leaders across the organization to enable consistent, high standards of evidence-based care for the client/patient population. The Director will establish the operational framework and infrastructure for program planning, implementation and evaluation, and ensures effective, safe delivery of care, development and establishment of processes. In addition to daily program oversight, the Director will ensure the delivery of several initiatives designed to yield high quality care for patients and their families. 

Key leadership initiatives for the new Director will be to:

  • Develop the business strategy and key metrics for this Program with a growth mindset as it relates to partnerships, service planning and clinical excellence with a broader community engaged model in mind.
  • Advance the profile of the Surgical Services by strengthening collaboration with both internal and external community partners.
  • Provide   leadership   to   guide   ongoing   continuous   performance   improvement   and   program efficiencies.
  • Develop and empower a cohesive and collaborative team that is service-driven and focused on establishing an exceptional patient care experience.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have strong clinical and business acumen giving them the capacity and capability to lead a multi-site, complex program with an unyielding desire to advance program efficiencies, enable improved performance metrics/outcomes, and empower a strong team to deliver on the organization’s longstanding program goals. Ideally, the Director will bring a track record of collaboration and relationship building and be passionate about leading change and implementing sustainable practices that continue to enable a high performing, outcome-focused team.   A developer of people, the Director will have the ability to coach, mentor and empower the Surgical Services frontline leaders. He/she will be a visible leader, and an excellent communicator that effectively models Osler’s corporate and program vision, mission, values and strategy to their managers and staff.           

Critical Success Factors

  • 5-7 years progressive leadership experience in a hospital or related health care environment, which must include five (5) years of experience in a management/leadership role and have director level experience.
  • Knowledge of Lean methodology.
  • Demonstrated experience and application of evidence-based practices in leadership.
  • Knowledge of strategic and operational planning, management principles and research-based practice
  • Knowledge of quality improvement, financial practices and risk management princip
  • Demonstrated strong financial and analytical
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and interpersonal skills that can be employed in a complex environment with multiple stakehold
  • History of building constructive and effective relationships and gaining credibility across disciplines, divisions, departments and program
