As Canada’s biological lifeline, Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is one part of Canada’s broader network of healthcare systems, and the only national manufacturer of biological products funded by Canada’s provincial and territorial governments. CBS provides blood and blood products, as well as transfusion and stem cell registry services, on behalf of all provincial and territorial governments, except Quebec. CBS also manages the national transplant registry for interprovincial organ sharing, as well as related programs for donation and transplantation for the entire country. Working with partners across the organ and tissue donation and transplantation (OTDT) community, CBS develops leading practices, supports professional education and public awareness activities, and collaborates on new ways to share data on the performance of the OTDT system in Canada.
Reporting to the Vice President of Medical Affairs and Innovation, the Director, Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation (Director) is responsible for providing the overall vision, strategic planning, and expertise for the program to enable Canadian Blood Services to realize its full potential as the national coordinating body for OTDT in Canada, and as a respected leader in OTDT internationally. The Director is accountable for ensuring that organizational objectives are achieved through continued development of the evolving organs and tissues program, including the effective and efficient operation of interprovincial organ sharing programs and the development and implementation of transformational national initiatives that improve system performance and outcomes for Canadians.
The Director is responsible for developing and fostering relationships and strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, including both clinical and governmental communities (local, regional, national and international). The Director will identify new opportunities to achieve OTDT program objectives aligned with corporate strategic objectives and ensure the Canadian Blood Services name represents trust and value to Canadians.
The Director, in collaboration with Associate Directors, Medical Advisors, external OTDT partners and stakeholders, and administrative and clinical thought leaders will foster a high degree of innovation, collaboration, and partnership that will lead to exemplary patient outcomes, improved access and quality, and increased public and professional education and awareness of OTDT. The Director will provide the strategic oversight and leadership for the planning, development, implementation, evolution and operational management of all activities related to organ and tissue donation and transplantation within the scope of Canadian Blood Services’ national mandate in this area.
As the ideal candidate, you have ten plus years of progressive management experience, including program and staff management leadership, in a clinical or health related environment. Your experience leading large, diverse teams and managing complex projects will be highly regarded. Strategic and forward thinking, you have knowledge of the OTDT system in Canada, gained from direct experience or from working within the healthcare sector in Canada or abroad. Your superb communications and negotiation skills will be beneficial in providing strategic guidance in a collaborative, consultative and positive manner to internal and external stakeholders. You are highly organized with excellent planning skills and thrive in a dynamic environment with ambitious schedules and plans. You possess post-secondary education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution, preferably an undergraduate degree in health sciences, or public administration. A Master’s degree in MBA or MHA would be considered an asset.
