Job Description

We are currently recruiting for a Manager of Emergency Department (ED), to join the busiest ED in Ontario providing care to an area of over 800,000 people.  Humber River Hospital’s Emergency Department delivers care to over 110,000 patients annually, providing timely, compassionate emergency treatment to patients and families. 

To provide operational leadership and direction in the 7/24/365 delivery, availability, and continuous improvement of interdisciplinary clinical programs and services that provide patient centred care

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct fiscal and human resources required for departmental and program operations
  • Provide operational and clinical processes guidance to staff; manage direct and indirect reports in collaboration with an interdisciplinary teams (e.g. EMS, Emergency, LHIN and community partners, medical staff, regulated health professionals, etc.)
  • Promote and encourage a collaborative staff and patient environment for patient-centred care that adapts to the needs of diverse internal and external communities
  • Oversee staff scheduling to include a mix of staff based on a variety of skills, experience, and other factors (e.g. acuity; knowledge levels; coverage of clinic hours; availability of resources and equipment; environmental/clinical context, etc.)
  • Identify required organizational support services, structures, and resources in collaboration with Clinical Practice Leaders (CPLs) for the safe and efficient operation of the department (e.g. supplies, diagnostics, pharmacy, transportation, technologies, food, etc.); assign resources to deliver safe patient care governed by professionally regulated priorities, standards, and best practices, aligned with professional and program quality standards, and organizational goals and priorities
  • Analyze and resolve issues in the delivery of patient care in collaboration with other units departments (e.g. staffing, redeployment, closures, isolation, infection control, inter-unit issues, etc.); invoke Incident Management System (IMS) for Emergency situations; escalate critical incidents (e.g. harm or death of staff, patients, patient families) to Director for resolution
  • Manage internal and external communications and coach unit staff in customer service methods; resolve patient and family concerns and labour related issues

Activities

  • Develop, plan, and implement innovative models and ideas for new areas of practice that support program strategies and enhance quality of patient care delivery, revenue generation, and cost effectiveness (e.g. approaches to reduce length of patient stay) in consultation with the Program Director and community health partners and stakeholders
  • Prepare project proposals, briefing notes, and business cases; conduct feasibility studies to determine project delivery methods and assign staff, equipment, and financial resources
  • Provide guidance and leadership during the development and implementation of organizational and departmental changes
  • Remain current with technical advancements and networks for benchmark comparisons; explore partnerships/business opportunities and best practices (e.g. plastics for surgery, private clinics, developing non-OHIP income models)

 

Location: Wilson Ave Site

 Salary: $97,000 to $109,000 annually

 

Requirements 

  • Experience leading an Emergency Department within a hospital or large healthcare organization. 
  • Minimum three years management/leadership experience           
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult education principles
  • Strong relationship building, engagement, and influencing skills               
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve across programs with tact and diplomacy
  • Membership in Good Standing with the College of Nurses on Ontario
