This position is a Unit Weekend Worker in accordance with Article 13.04 of the Central Collective Agreement. Reporting to the Clinical Manager of the Emergency Department, the Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for conducting emergency mental health assessments including but not limited to assessment of mental status indicators, multiple risk factors, symptom history, and presenting problems. This role requires independent skills at assessment and formulation of complex presenting problems and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team within the CHEO Emergency Department Team as well as with the CHEO Regional Psychiatric Emergency Services for Children and Youth (RPESCY).
The nurse will also support triage nurses in the emergency room in the identification and appropriate streaming of patients presenting with mental health emergencies, and will be responsible for referrals to appropriate services for patients who are discharged. The nurse will support the admission process to inpatient psychiatry when the decision for disposition is an admission. The nurse collaborates with the patient, the family and team members to identify priorities for intervention and develop a plan for problem resolution. The nurse will also support the activities regarding the planning, implementation and activations of urgent care pathways with community partners.
When not working with patients presenting with Mental Health Complaints, the RN will support Care for all Emergency Department Patients in collaboration with the ED Team through their own initiative and as directed by the Care Facilitator or Charge nurse. Duties may include ED assessment and intervention as outlined in ED nursing standards of practice.
