Located in Ottawa, Canada’s Capital, The Royal is one of Canada’s foremost mental health care, teaching and research hospitals, combining specialized mental health care, advocacy, research, and education to transform the lives of people living with mental illness. The Royal’s Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR) is home to a diverse portfolio of innovative research programs and a state-of-the art Brain Imaging Centre that features a positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (PET-fMRI) scanner dedicated solely to mental health and neuroscience research, and helping to inform the development of more precise diagnostics and therapies.

In this exciting, inaugural role, the President & VP Research (“P/VP”) will be supported by Research Unit Directors and a team of Scientists responsible for specific research portfolios. As a member of the Royal’s Executive Management Team, the P/VP will ensure the IMHR’s strategic alignment and integration with the hospital’s strategy, and actively participate in all hospital-wide matters including strategy, general operations, finances, quality, risk management, performance management, human resources, and information technology.

The P/VP will champion an aspirational vision for research across the organization, from bench to bedside, providing strategic direction and leadership to achieve that vision. With a focus on improving patient and family-centered care and outcomes, the P/VP will promote, support, and drive efforts to integrate research, learning, and clinical practice, and work to enhance the Royal’s commitment to the education and training of learners. As the ambassador and trusted voice of research at The Royal, the P/VP will play an important advocacy and stakeholder relations role, garnering support and building strong ties with The Royal’s Foundation, other research institutes, uOttawa, as well as other learning organizations. The P/VP will also establish and maintain critical relationships with the private sector, governments, and policy makers, as well as a range of funding partners, granting bodies, and donors at the local, provincial, national, and international levels.

Your record of scientific and organizational leadership has now prepared you to lead one of Canada’s most respected mental health research enterprises. As the ideal candidate, you are a respected, strategic leader with a compelling vision for mental health research and possess strong operational and administrative experience. You have a track record of scientific achievement and are considered by your peers to be a credible leader in your field and an authoritative voice and advocate for health research. Your exceptional problem-solving skills have served you well in leading a complex research enterprise, as has your ability to exercise sound judgment and to motivate and inspire individuals and teams to excel.
