Join Health Sciences North (HSN), one of Canada’s Top 40 research hospitals and Northern Ontario’s largest hospital, as Vice-President, People Relations and Corporate Affairs. Reporting to a dynamic President and Chief Executive Officer, you will lead a team of more than 50 colleagues in Human Resources, Occupational Health and Safety, Leadership and Learning, Communications and Community Engagement and support Board Governance. 

HSN is the tertiary care centre for Northeastern Ontario, affiliated with Laurentian University and its Northern Ontario School of Medicine. It has 4,000 employees, 500 medical staff members, 2,100 learners, 700 volunteers and a $530 million dollar budget. It ranks in the top 10% of North American hospitals on the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and its patient experience survey results are above the average of Ontario’s teaching hospitals on most indicators. The regional cancer program ranks among Ontario’s top five regional cancer programs out of 14 on quality indicators.

HSN is seeking an experienced, talented leader to join their Executive Team. The new Vice-President will be a self-aware, community-minded leader, and savvy communicator who has a track record of demonstrating judgment, achieving results and doing so with creativity. 

The successful candidate will champion five of the 19 desired outcomes articulated in the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan (that you can view at www.yourhsn.ca):

  • Implement a Human Capital Management System;
  • Co-design and deliver cultural safety and diversity training programs;
  • Implement a staff and physician wellness program;
  • Double the annual investment in staff and leadership development;
  • Embed in all relevant performance plans and job descriptions expectations around patient care, teaching and research.

You and your team will:

  • Be strategic business partners for HSN’s leaders;
  • Champion efforts to reduce occupational safety hazards and workplace violence;
  • Promote strategies to manage change and ensure HSN employees receive timely and formal feedback on their performance;
  • Enhance internal communications and effective relationships to foster a positive quality of work life and build employee morale;
  • Intensify workforce planning, talent management and organizational development enabling HSN to continue to offer high-quality care while 1,200 employees may retire in the next five years;
  • Promote an active offer of French-language health services;
  • Provide advice as integrated care delivery systems are created through Ontario Health Teams;
  • Oversee strategies for patient-centered social media and web presence and innovative community engagement efforts;
  • Uphold best practices as reflected in Accreditation Canada governance and leadership standards;
  • Nurture relationships with union leaders, including oversight of collective bargaining and stewardship of existing agreements.

The desired profile for the selected candidate includes: 

  • At least five (5) years of experience at the Director, General Counsel, Executive Director, Associate Vice-President, Chief Administrative Officer, Assistant Deputy Minister, Vice-President or CEO levels;
  • Knowledge of and leadership experience in one or more of the following functions: Human Resources, Leadership and Learning, Occupational Health and Wellness, Communications and Community Engagement, Governance, Organizational Development;
  • Visionary leader with strong business acumen, innovative thinking and results orientation;
  • Knowledge of effective practices in change management and project management;
  • Excellent communicator who can negotiate and inspire;
  • Dynamic, determined, adaptable and collaborative leader;
  • Experience leading supervisors and/or a team of at least 15 employees;
  • Supervisory experience in a unionized environment;
  • Graduate or law degree.

Bilingualism (English and French) would be an asset, as would experience in the health care sector, in the implementation of Human Capital Management Systems and in external relations or corporate communications. A Certified Health Executive designation, Certified Human Resources Executive designation or other relevant professional designation would also be an asset.
