Director of Finance


Reporting to the VP Finance, Technology & Innovation, CFO, the Director, Finance is responsible for financial planning and analysis, financial modeling, financial strategy, organizational performance reporting and capital budgeting. Functions reporting to the Director include business analysis, case costing, treasury and general accounting, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable. 

The role requires a strong collaborative leader who can cultivate partnerships within and beyond Southlake’s walls for positive change. The Director plays a key role in the hospital’s approach to funding reform in addition to financial aspects of the Southlake Community Ontario Health Team (OHT) and Southlake@home strategies. It will appeal to an experienced financial leader who has the courage to think differently and is passionate about making a difference in the lives of others. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Leading annual and multi-year operating and capital budgeting processes while providing practical strategic advice that supports the hospital in achieving its financial goals and objectives.
  • Leading detailed monthly, quarterly and annual reporting, monitoring and forecasting of the hospital’s financial position. This includes developing and implementing appropriate analytical tools for reviewing financial and statistical information to enable effective decision making.
  • Contributing financial expertise and analysis in support of innovative approaches to health system and health funding reform, models of care, procurement and analytics.
  • A focus on quality improvement through ongoing monitoring and implementation of initiatives and remedies to provide high quality financial services to all stakeholders.
  • Liaising with external service providers such as Plexxus, MEDITECH, audit firms and bankers.
  • Monitoring compliance and producing all required attestations and similar compliance declarations.
  • Leading the hospital’s planning and execution of work related to internal and external audits.
  • Supporting the hospital’s journey to greater analytics maturity and achievement of its goal to set the standard in using analytics to maximize quality outcomes and efficiency.
  • Regularly presenting to hospital senior leadership and Board Committees on matters related to the financial health of the hospital.
  • Directing and monitoring policies and procedures related to financial management within the hospital.

Required Qualifications:

  • University Degree and professional accounting designation required (CPA or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5  years financial leadership at the management level
  • Previous related management and/or leadership experience within a healthcare setting would be an asset
  • Strong business acumen with solid experience in business management, financial planning, performance measurement and budgeting functions
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to identify trends, establish benchmarks, as well as provide credible analysis and business recommendations
  • High emotional intelligence with excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex financial issues to a broad audience
  • Ability to work and thrive in a changing environment while experiencing financial constraints
  • Evidence of a collaborative leadership style with effective team building skills
  • Excellent decision making skills with the ability to form and defend independent judgment with the ability to influence others and outcomes
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to effectively handle a large number of issues simultaneously
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure/stressful conditions
  • Must be change orientated and possess an attitude of continuous improvement
