In this new role, the Director, Ambulatory Care and Major Projects will play a key strategic role as an as an influential expert, liaising with the clinical leaders across the organization to enable consistent, high standards of evidence-based care to the ambulatory patient population. The Director will lead planning for the future state of the ambulatory care platform and will work within the existing governance structure to facilitate opportunities for standardization, collaboration, and integration.

The Director will play a dual role, which will include: 1) supporting planning and operational readiness for the new hospital information system (the OneTHP Project), and 2) planning for the ambulatory care future state, including workflows, models of care and information services, as we plan for the hospital capital redevelopment initiative (the Broader Redevelopment Project). The Director will inspire and ensure an ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centred care by actively promoting and advancing standards and best practices, and high-quality services. The Director will work closely with senior leadership, patient care services leadership, executive sponsors for strategic projects, and project teams to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to supporting change across all facets of the organization.

The Director will be instrumental in the development of THP’s future ambulatory care platform and will be integrated into the planning, design, and implementation of major projects currently underway at THP. In particular, the Director will act as a key liaison between the programs that provide ambulatory care services and the OneTHP Project executive and operational leaders. The Director will also collaborate with other major project teams as needed, including experts skilled in planning, design, equipment, and information and technology supporting the Broader Redevelopment Project.

Ideally, the Director will bring a track record of effective relationship building, and be passionate about leading change and implementing sustainable practices with peers across the organization. The Director will be an excellent communicator who effectively models THP’s corporate and program vision, mission, values and strategy to their managers and staff.


1. Partnerships and Strategic Planning

  • With the Senior Leadership Team, define the strategic priorities for ambulatory care in alignment with THP’s strategic plan and lead the development of short- and long-term goals and objectives for the platform.
  • Support the development of a vision for the future state of ambulatory care at THP.
  • Identify current state and opportunities for standardization related to models of care, workflow, clinical practice standardization, information services, technology, space planning, etc. Set out an approach to reach proposed future state, and facilitate the establishment of standardization.
  • Lead cross-program implementation of ambulatory standards to support OneTHP.
  • Support the implementation, adoption and ongoing optimization of the new hospital electronic record to enable the current and proposed future state of ambulatory care.
  • Identify meaningful and measurable performance indicators to support continuous quality improvement and program planning.
  • Support the management of interdependencies between major projects and other key initiatives underway within the program, and establishing interdisciplinary decision-making between programs and within the Program.
  • Work with Patient Care Services leaders to represent THP within other service providers, planning groups, and provincial government staff and ensure a strong linkage with community agencies and other groups in order to facilitate a seamless continuum of patient care between the Hospital and the community.
  • Work with provincial, regional and local programs to plan, implement and evaluate overall vision of ambulatory care at THP.

 2. Planning and Readiness for OneTHP Project

  • Provide leadership and support decision-making related to the implementation of Epic as part of the OneTHP project, ensuring alignment to leading practices and adherence to project guiding principles.
  • Facilitate consultation with leaders responsible for ambulatory clinics across THP, gaining consensus on proposed changes to workflow and clinical practice standardization.
  • Ensure alignment and support of OneTHP engagement, change management and communication strategies.
  • Identify opportunities for standardization across the ambulatory platform and create consensus among operational leaders to support the change with the OneTHP Executive Project Leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with the OneTHP Clinical Lead, Chief Medical Information Officer, Director of Clinical Informatics, OneTHP Ambulatory Working Group, Practice and Process Redesign and other members of the OneTHP team to review content and workflows relating to ambulatory care, providing input, feedback and issue resolution.

3. Planning and Operational Readiness for Broader Redevelopment

  • Provide leadership, ensure strong program engagement and change management, and support decision-making related to redevelopment projects, including ensuring strategic alignment between the THP’s vision and planning, design and implementation.
  • Identify opportunities to implement program-specific capital/operational/clinical efficiencies and optimizations within the context of capital planning.
  • Support preparation of the program for transition to the new space, including operational planning related to process and flow, staff training, updates to policies and procedures, integration of equipment and enabling technologies, and development of communication and change management plans.


The successful candidate will have 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in a similarly complex acute care environment; they will be a person who excels by building relationships, promoting collaboration, managing change, and seeking out innovative solutions. A transformational leader, the successful candidate will have the ability to continuously improve the staff and patient experience, while advancing outcomes in a high-volume, fast-paced, multi-site environment.

The Director will have experience in significant change management in a hospital environment; they will be highly motivated to work with key stakeholders and will excel at service excellence. The successful candidate will serve as a strategic clinical leader who challenges the status quo of existing workflows, operations and the patient care environment to drive a better outcome. This individual will also have comprehensive experience planning, managing and implementing clinical restructuring, large-scale EHR, and/or capital projects; in particular, experience with space and program planning is considered an asset.


  • Master's degree in a health-related field is required;
  • 5+ years of experience in progressive management experience, with experience in a leadership role in a hospital patient care environment, with some outpatient experience preferred;
  • Registered with an appropriate college without restrictions;
  • Awareness of Hospital Information System (HIS) implementation processes and importance of change management principles to support;
  • Awareness of functional planning and operational readiness processes;
  • Proven success in gaining credibility, influencing and building trust across all levels of the organization, including senior decision makers;
  • Demonstrated systems thinker with experience in leading transformational change;
  • Strong organizational, analytical and communication abilities as well as excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
