Director, Medicine Programs - Southlake Regional Health Centre

Reports to: Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer


Southlake Regional Health Centre is a full-service hospital with a regional, clinically advanced focus.

Southlake offers 500 patient beds and accommodates more than 113,000 visits to the Emergency Department, nearly 25,000 in-patient admissions, and more then 500,000 out-patient visits each year. As a regionally designated site, Southlake is responsible for developing and providing advanced levels of care to the more than 1 million people who reside in York Region, Simcoe County, and in some cases, as far north as Muskoka. This is a region that has seen significant growth over the last 10 years and has the highest number of seniors in the province. Advanced, specialty services include: arthritis care, cancer care, cardiac care, cataract surgery, child and adolescent eating disorders, mental health services for children, pediatrics and perinatal care and thoracic surgery.

The Medicine Program

This portfolio encompasses clinical in-patient units, including: Intensive Care Unit, Acute Medicine Inpatient Units, Medical Complex Continuing Care, Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and Ambulatory Medicine Programs. In addition, the program includes, regional programs for diabetes and arthritic care, Health Link and the Outpatient Rehab Department and the recent addition of two offsite 30 bed restorative care units. The Program accounts for $45 million dollars of budget and is home to 500 dedicated front-line staff and accounts for roughly half the hospitals beds.

This role comes at an exciting time as two recently developed community integrated external partnerships; Southlake at Home and Southlake Elder Care - while brand new, are already having tremendous impact on the medicine programs ability to have the right patents in the right beds. Southlake is also embarking on a new master plan which would see Medicine more centralized and create new capacity and space.

Southlake is ideally looking for a seasoned and experienced individual already at the Director level to fill the vacancy of Director, Medicine Programs.

Through a team of 7 managers, 5 educators and 8 nurse practitioners, this person will balance the day to day operational needs with strategic priorities and set the direction for the department through example and in accordance with the strategic priorities of the hospital and the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

The Program Director is responsible for enhancing interprofessional collaboration and delivering the Ultimate Patient Experience throughout the continuum of patient care. Internally, the Program Director collaborates with the Vice Presidents, Program Directors, Physician Leaders, Managers, Chiefs of Service and other team members to ensure effective team work and achievement of the targeted outcomes and the effective and efficient use of resources within the program. Externally, the Program Director collaborates with partner hospitals and community agencies. The Director ensures that systems are in place to enable optimal clinical decision-making and patient care.


We are seeking an individual who is innovative and creative in their thinking, someone who is not afraid to try new things in an effort to effect change. We want a leader who cultivates and coaches talented managers and front-line staff. The next Director will be a broad systems thinker, someone equally committed to internal and community partnerships with the following backgrounds, experience and personal attributes:


  • Baccalaureate degree in health-related discipline, Related Master’s degree required
  • Active Professional Membership
  • Regulated Health Professional, i.e. College of Nurses of Ontario


  • Minimum of five years recent experience in related clinical and administrative areas
  • A proven track record of leading positive interprofessional collaboration
  • A proven track record of leading innovation and change
  • A proven track record of exceeding targets and objectives


  • A strong understanding of health delivery issues
  • Agent of change with ability to envision new concepts, methods, and plans
  • Understanding of cost-effective and quality systems of delivery of service
  • Ability to work with all health disciplines to achieve quality of care
  • Proven leadership abilities working with large interprofessional teams
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships with both internal and external partners to ensure high quality and safe care to our patients and families
  • Demonstrated analytical and financial management skills with a strong ability to monitor and control large budgets
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, in addition to database management skills
  • Approachable, innovative, and professional management style
  • Demonstrated ability to energize, coach, encourage, and support all staff
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships with both internal and external partners to ensure high quality and safe care to our patients and families
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, verbal and written communication, customer service, analytical approach, fiscal management including “other vote” funding, teamwork, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated visionary, creative and collaborative management style
  • Demonstrated excellence in critical program analysis
