Advanced Practice Nurse – Mental Health

We currently have a regular full time opportunity for an Advanced Practice Nurse in our Mental Health program (Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program) at our Bayview campus.

The Advanced practice Nurse (APN), as an expert in specialized practice grounded in knowledge that comes from nursing theory and other theoretical foundations, experience, and research, is responsible for integrating and advancing clinical excellence through the application and evaluation of best practices to improve outcomes. Working collaboratively with the Managers, and other members of the Interprofessional Care Team, the APN:

  • Integrates standards of practice, person-centred and senior friendly care, advanced nursing best practices, and innovative approaches to patient care within the mental health specialty.
  • Leads professional development and knowledge exchange related to clinical specialty.
  • Champions the ongoing development of quality standards and documentation, integrating nursing standards and evidence-based practice.
  • Plans, coordinates and organizes quality improvement initiatives to advance best practices, evaluate quality of nursing care, and support professional development of nursing staff.
  • Advances the Program’s academic mandate through teaching and research.


  • Current Ontario College of Nurses Certificate of competence
  • Current BCLS certificate
  • Master’s degree completed or in progress
  • Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing certification preferred
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention certification required
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in Mental Health Nursing
  • Collaborative, engaging and empowering approach to teaching/learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to infection prevention and control principles
  • Demonstrated teaching and leadership abilities
  • Ability to assist staff in integrating the concept of person-centred and senior friendly care into clinical practice
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively make and manage change and act as a positive change agent
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Bill 68 and its implications for treatment
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to foster highly effective inter-professional teams
  • Demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and innovation
  • Computer proficiency in: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and internet access.
