The Position

In this key leadership role, the Director, Surgery and Perioperative Services (Director) will be accountable for the overall operations and service delivery of the Surgery and Perioperative Services program, a multi-site, fast-paced program with total surgical volumes of approximately 65,000 per year. The Director’s portfolio includes a comprehensive suite of perioperative services encompassing thoracic, vascular, general, orthopaedic, neurosurgery, oral, ear, nose and throat, gynecology, ophthalmology, plastic, and urology surgeries, as well as a broad range of ambulatory services including Preoperative Assessment Clinics and Surgery Clinics. Working in close partnership with the Chief and Medical Director of Surgery, Chief and Medical Director of Anesthesia, Chief and Medical Director and Program Director of Neuro/MSK, and Chief and Medical Director and Program Director of Women’s and Children’s Health, the Director will oversee approximately 500 staff across all 3 THP sites, with a total annual budget of approximately $80M. In this strategic and operational role, the Director will ensure an ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centred care by actively promoting and continuing to advance best practices and high-quality services, both within and outside of the Hospital.

Key leadership initiatives for the new Director will be to:           

  • Develop and implement an innovative business strategy based on key metrics for this Program as it relates to partnerships, service planning, and clinical excellence.
  • Deliver on high-quality surgical services aligned with THP’s Quality Improvement Plan.
  • Advance the profile of Surgical and Perioperative Services by strengthening regional collaborations with hospital and community partners.
  • Provide regional and provincial leadership to guide ongoing system-level initiatives exploring bundled care and other health system integration program efficiencies.
  • Play a leadership role in developing strategies related to capital planning and program development.
  • Develop and empower a cohesive and collaborative team that is service-driven and focused on establishing an exceptional patient care experience, both within the portfolio and across the organization with key program partners.


The successful candidate will have 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in a similarly complex acute care environment, excelling by building relationships, promoting collaboration, managing change, and seeking out innovative alternatives. A champion of transformation, the successful candidate will have the ability to continuously raise the level of care while advancing outcomes in a high-volume, fast-paced, multi-site environment. In addition to a Master Degree, the candidate will ideally bring leadership experience in surgical/ambulatory or perioperative services.
