Position Profile:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Quality, Patient Safety and Innovation, the Manager, Patient Safety works collaboratively with leadership, staff and physicians to provide expertise in patient safety across the Network (Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital).

The primary function of the Manager is to lead an innovative team that enables the organization to measurably improve patient safety and the prevention of harm.  This requires the implementation of reliable systems, infrastructure and practices related to patient safety while motivating a culture to enable the presence of safety in all of the organization’s activity. The Manager will provide day to day operational management of the safety team and lead corporate wide improvement initiatives in support of the patient safety strategy and corporate quality improvement plan.


  • Baccalaureate degree required; Master’s degree complete or in progress preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical professional background required. Current registration with a health professional regulatory body and be a member in good standing with a professional association.
  • Expert knowledge of Patient Safety with the ability to introduce innovative approaches to change.
  • Canadian Patient Safety Officer training preferred. Familiarity with the Measuring and Monitoring of Safety Framework (Vincent Framework) an asset.
  • Experience in engaging patients and families in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Sound knowledge of continuous quality improvement tools and methodologies along with project management methodologies.
  • Ability to use data for improvement is critical.
  • Experience managing a team an asset. Position will lead a team across the Network including Patient Safety Specialists, Analyst and Coordinator positions.
  • Superior stakeholder engagement skills with a transparent communicative style balancing sensitivity in conversations on safety with accountability in building a superior safety culture in the organization.
  • Satisfactory attendance record.
