Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Executive (CNE), the Director Pharmacy is responsible for leading the pharmacy team to develop program objectives in alignment with, and supporting our strategic plan. This position plays a critical role as an advocate for patient and staff safety, while cultivating an environment where the organization’s values: Teamwork, Respect, Accountability and Compassion, are demonstrated.

Key Accountabilities include:  

  • Leadership and oversight to fulfill requirements for Pharmacy Accreditation with the Ontario College of Pharmacists and for Accreditation Canada medication management standards
  • Oversight of pharmacy operations and budget, including: human resource planning, drug procurement, drug preparation, drug dispensing, clinical pharmacy services, medication reconciliation and program evaluation.
  • Development of policies, procedures and processes that are in accordance with best practice, meet regulatory standards, and ensure safe medication and drug distribution practices.
  • Staff engagement using evidence-based leadership practices while promoting a community of problem solvers to ensure a cohesive, high functioning team.
  • Leadership and participation in both internal and external partnerships to improve systems of care

Guelph General Hospital is currently embarking on the development of a closed loop medication system; leveraging new technologies to enable safer medication practices and efficiencies in the delivery of medication care. This ambitious project will include the introduction of: medication barcoding, Computerized Physician Order Entry, an Electronic Medication Administration Record and Bedside Medication Verification. This project will take place over the next 18-24 months. 

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Pharmacy or entry level Pharm D degree from an accredited Canadian University
  • Post-graduate education in Business or Health System Management, preferred
  • Licensed Pharmacist, in Part A, with the Ontario College of Pharmacists
  • Minimum 5 years in a retail or hospital-based pharmacy setting
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience, ideally within a health care environment
  • Minimum 3 years experience in oncology pharmacy practice
  • Demonstrated experience in promoting high quality, interdisciplinary work environments that result in safe, quality, patient-centered outcomes
  • Demonstrated leadership in project management using Lean methodologies
  • Demonstrated success of implemented initiatives that have improved both clinical and fiscal utilization
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to apply expert facilitation and conflict management skills and expertise to influence and negotiate effective resolution of issues/disputes
  • Commitment to on-going learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
