Kingston Health Sciences Centre - Chief Financial Officer

Launched April 1, 2017, Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is Southeastern Ontario’s largest acute-care academic hospital. Consisting of the Hotel Dieu Hospital site and Kingston General Hospital site, as well as the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario and two research institutes, KHSC cares for more than 500,000 patients and families from across the region. As one of Kingston’s largest employers, KHSC is home to nearly 5,000 staff, more than 2,000 health-care learners and 1,000 volunteers who are committed to partnering with patients and families to ensure high quality, compassionate care. Fully affiliated with Queen’s University, KHSC is ranked as one of Canada’s top research hospitals.

This past year has been a time of significant and exciting change as the two organizations have come together to create one health sciences centre. KHSC has just completed its first strategic plan that charts a bold and innovative vision of “Transforming care, together” in its journey to becoming a high-performing healthcare/academic health sciences organization.

The Chief Financial Officer is a key member of the KHSC executive team and will report directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer. In support of KHSC’s mission, vision, values and new corporate strategy, the incumbent will have responsibility for leading and championing the organization’s financial health in support of the patients and families served. S/he will offer expert financial and budgetary advice and will be responsible for providing the overall direction for KHSC’s financial assets and liabilities associated with its approximate $575 million operating budget. S/he may also be responsible for other clinical and administrative support services as appropriate.

In leading by example, the incumbent will want to focus on the following key priorities:

  • Positively contribute to the emerging identity and culture of the new organization, still in its formative stages;
  • Assist in finalizing and implementing KHSC’s first strategic plan;
  • Be a strong business partner to the President and CEO and develop strong relationships/partnerships with colleagues and physicians;
  • Establish strong external relationships including with the LHIN, Ministry of Health, Queen’s University, regional hospitals and numerous partners;
  • Lead/assist the organization in maintaining balanced budgets while striving for growth, innovation, and outcomes;
  • Assist with prioritizing corporate and clinical initiatives as a business partner with an active stake in strategic decision-making while providing pragmatic evaluation of current and future strategies/projects/programs and associated risks;
  • Lead/assist with integration work, including merging financial systems;
  • Represent KHSC on various external committees;
  • Lead/assist with regional opportunities that may arise;
  • Provide key leadership to KHSC’s capital redevelopment plan;
  • Work closely with Performance Management to assist in the adoption of best-practice, performance-based decisions across the organization;
  • Mentor and develop talent and continue to build the capability of the team;
  • Provide appropriate support to the Board, the Finance and Audit Committee, the Redevelopment Committee, and other Board Committees as required; and
  • Assist the Foundation in aligning donor interests with projects.

Success in this role will require a combination of financial experience and acumen, executive leadership, championship of change and results achievement, inclusive of the following:

  • Experienced financial leadership (CPA); strategic thinker; business acumen;
  • Hospital sector experience is an asset;
  • Experience with partnerships and capital development ideal;
  • Comfortable with size and scale of operation;
  • Can operate well in period of ‘newness’ with ambiguity, lots of change, “grey”;
  • Experience working at the senior level and credible with a Board;
  • Strong relationship builder – internal and external;
  • Collaborative but not a “yes” person; confident;
  • Enabler and optimizer – balances fiscal prudence with creativity and solutions-orientation;
