Job Description

Working in the evolving Health Information Management Dept., the Clinical Document Improvement (CDI) Specialist supports the quality, completeness and accuracy of clinical documentation and coding data quality by providing concurrent and retrospective reviews of patient medical records.  The CDI Specialist works closely with the Director, Enterprise Information Management, Healthcare Providers, Coding Data quality Analyst, Coders and other members of the HIM team.  The role also includes educating members of the patient care team, including attending physicians and/or most responsible providers, residents and fellows regarding documentation guidelines.  The CDI Specialist will also help develop education materials, provide metrics to support KPIs and prepare materials to support various meetings including a CDI Steering Committee.

Here's What You'll Get To Do

  • Review concurrent and retrospective patient charts to ensure quality, completeness and accuracy
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and standardization of clinical documentation
  • Working alongside coding data quality analyst to follow-up with physicians using coding query functionality in Epic
  • Prepare materials including metrics for the CDI Steering Committee meeting
  • Develop education materials and communication to improve clinical documentation and coding data quality
  • Gather data and analyze performance metrics to build upon the CDI initiative

Here's What You'll Need

  • Bachelor of Nursing and/or Certified Health Information Management
  • Strong working knowledge of coding data quality and analysis and Health Based Allocation Model Inpatient Grouping methodology (HIG)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ICD-10-CA, Case Mix Groups (CMGs), Resource Intensity Weight (RIW), HBAM and Expected LOS (ELOS)
  • CHIM certification and maintenance commitment
  • Strong experience with health information management systems, including but not limited to Epic, Allscripts, Med2020, etc.
  • CDI Certification is an asset
  • Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Knowledge of hospital workflows and processes
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and take initiative
  • Demonstrate ability to be self-directed, organized and flexible
