Job Description

Toronto East General opened its doors in 1929 as the first Toronto hospital east of the Don River. It has always been the heart of the east Toronto community, consistently providing excellent care for families dealing with health issues along the full continuum of care, from welcoming a new life to facing end-of-life.

An important new chapter began in December 2015 as Toronto East General became the Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), the keystone of the newly created Toronto East Health Network, in recognition of the generous $50M gift from the Garron family in memory of their son, Michael. The Michael Garron Hospital name is attached to the main campus at 825 Coxwell Avenue providing acute and complex care.

Today, MGH is a large, urban, full-service community teaching hospital, providing comprehensive care to a diverse population of 400,000 living within the community. Annually, MGH admits 20,000 acute care inpatients, delivers 3,000 babies, has nearly 80,000 emergency visits and provides service to over 200,000 outpatients. This is accomplished with the help of 2,500 employees, 400+ physicians and midwives and over 500 adult and student volunteers. In addition to the services offered as a full service general hospital, MGH also has a number of specialty programs and services on site and in the community. MGH has been the recipient of many awards including the Order of Excellence from Excellence Canada, holds exemplary standing with Accreditation Canada and was one of the GTA's Top 100 Employers in 2017.

The Role

Within this context, MGH seeks a Vice President, Programs who will play a key role in the ongoing evolution of the organization and the pursuit of its mission and vision.  Reporting to the President and CEO, the VP Programs is accountable for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and management of the delivery of high quality clinical services in hospital and for several community-based programs. S/he will provide leadership and strategic direction to Complex Continuing Care and Rehabilitation, Family and Community Medicine, Maternal/Newborn Child, Mental Health, Medicine, Surgical Services and Emergency Services. The total portfolio is 1100 FTEs and $125M budget.  Additionally, the VP Programs is responsible for planning the clinical services that will move into the new Patient Care Centre that will open its doors in approximately 4 years. 

As a key member of the Executive Team, this role advises the President and CEO on the development of a corporate strategy and, by applying a corporate and strategic lens to quality and safe patient care, is seen as a key business enabler for the hospital.

Priorities and Near-term Expectations

  • Quickly establish oneself as a valued member of the senior management team and earn the respect of all stakeholders, internal and external;
  • Continue to develop the talent, capability, culture and succession plan for Programs;
  • Work closely with the Chief of Staff to build effective relationships with physicians, exemplifying the highest quality model of co-leadership;
  • Work closely with the VP Patient Experience, Health Professions and CNE to advance the models of care and interprofessional practice;
  • Tend to the day-to-day operating issues while maintaining focus on broader systems initiatives;
  • Build and manage relationships with a number of external partners and collaborators such as the Joint Centres for Transformative Healthcare Innovation, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto Central LHIN, Cancer Care Ontario, and Mental Health and Addictions Acute Care Alliance;
  • Play a critical leadership role in MGH’s major redevelopment project.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Has a Master’s degree in Business or Health Administration or clinical program;
  • Is currently registered with a professional body and/or has Certified Health Executive designation;
  • Demonstrates commitment to on-going learning and professional development;
  • Has a minimum of 15 years’ experience in progressively more responsible hospital leadership roles;
  • Has extensive experience garnered in the healthcare sector; previous senior management experience is an asset;
  • Demonstrates behaviours that support MGH’s core values of Compassion, Integrity, Courage and Accountability;
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety;
  • Demonstrates current clinical knowledge of professional best practices, legislative requirements and ethical standards consistent with providing safe, quality patient care;
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to lead and motivate others in practice innovation;
  • Is self-directed, courageous, and highly motivated with excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Has proven success in business development and growth and is able to manage competing demands in an ambiguous, fast paced environment;
  • Has a track record of establishing trusting and meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Has the ability to work with a diverse group of leaders and stakeholders with demonstrated success in moving key stakeholders to positive resolution;
  • Has working knowledge and experience with hospital strategic and operational planning and budgeting processes;
  • Has a track record of taking on stretch challenges and delivering on commitments;
