A member of the Performance Excellence Team, the Patient Safety and Risk Management Coordinator provides leadership in risk management and patient safety in alignment with the hospital strategic plan, current legislation and applicable performance standards. The Coordinator works collaboratively with the leadership team, service teams, staff and credentialed staff members to ensure the alignment of risk management and patient safety plans.
The role provides a resource to patients, families, staff, credentialed staff and volunteers to help direct concerns as appropriate and extract learnings for the organization. The Coordinator fosters a just and trusting culture that supports continuous quality improvement in relation to risk and patient safety.
• University Degree in Nursing or other allied health required
• Masters Degree in Nursing or other allied health preferred
• A member in good standing with the appropriate regulatory college
• Certification/education in Risk Management &/or Patient Safety Patient strongly preferred
• Minimum five (5) years experience in clinical care and/or clinical leadership,
• Document management and patient safety leadership experience in a healthcare setting preferred
• Knowledge of hospital routine practices, incident management, just culture, disclosure and Accreditation standards related to patient safety and risk management
• Ability to facilitate effective working relationships with internal and external customers/stakeholders, including the ability to negotiate, resolve conflict and mediate disputes.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with performance measurement and reporting systems in health care
• Knowledge and experience in researching information, data analysis and using statistics
• Extensive knowledge of current legislation governing health care facilities (e.g. Public Hospital Act, Mental Health Act, QCIPA, FIPPA, ECFAA and the Coroners’ Act).
• Ability to act as a change agent to reduce potential for adverse events and improve patient safety.
• Commitment to maintain a comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of laws, policies, standards or regulations and research.
• Excellent critical thinking, organizational, interpersonal, facilitation, consultation and presentation skills
• Knowledge and experience in the application of adult learning principles
• Experience facilitating the Root Cause Analysis process
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a high pressure environment
• Advanced knowledge with Window’s Operating System, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
