Take a leadership role in a community agency whose aim is to ensure that women served in the community feel safe, respected and recognized
Sistering is a multi-service agency for at-risk, socially isolated women in Toronto who are homeless or precariously housed, and has been serving this community for over 35 years, validating women’s experiences regardless of outcomes. These marginalized women come from diverse backgrounds and include: women with substance use and mental health issues; women who have experienced, or are experiencing, trauma and violence; immigrant and refugee women; women with disabilities; and women without legal status. Sistering creates a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental space for women and is guided by principles of feminism, anti-racism and anti-oppression. Sistering offers practical and emotional support to women who experience social isolation, homelessness or precarious housing, trauma and violence, discrimination, substance use or need mental health support.
Sistering’s target population is women across Toronto who experience first hand the impact of marginalization and poverty. They may be without homes, sleeping outside, living in Out of the Cold programs or shelters, or poor and at risk of becoming homeless. Since 2015, Sistering has offered a unique low-barrier 24/7 drop-in centre which operates as a place to call home. Sistering also advocates for the women it serves through lobbying for safe, low barrier shelters, affordable housing and economically accessible transportation.
Sistering Toronto is seeking to add an additional member to its leadership team as a Unit Director.
The Unit Director will report to the Executive Director and be responsible for the development, management supervision and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services. The Unit Director will also develop the policy and advocacy agenda for the organization and will foster a spirit of teamwork and collaboration across the agency and with other women-serving organizations. As a member of the senior management team, the Unit Director will participate in strategic planning and budgeting initiatives and provide supervision for the Drop In Coordinators, Program Coordinators, and case support and harm reduction teams.
The Unit Director will have at least five years of proven experience in a leadership capacity in the community-based non-profit sector with a focus on advocacy for women’s rights and leadership in a unionized environment. The Unit Director will also bring an understanding of supporting and working with an anti-oppression and anti-racism framework. An innovative leader with excellent interpersonal skills and an accomplished team builder, the Unit Director will promote a culture of inclusion, collaboration, excellence and continuous improvement and demonstrate an understanding of working in a culturally diverse environment. The Unit Director will ideally have policy expertise in the areas of homelessness and housing, harm reduction and/or peer programming. The Unit Director will also be able to demonstrate a strong track record of sound financial management, revenue generation, human resource management and change management experience. The Unit Director will hold a degree-level qualification in social work, sociology, health sciences or in a comparable field, or demonstrate commensurate leadership experience in the sector.
