Job Description

Position: Program Director, Mental Health


Reporting to the Vice President, Patient Care Services and together with the Chief & Medical Director, Mental Health, you will provide exceptional strategic, inspirational, and innovative leadership to the staff and professional staff of the Mental Health Program at Trillium Health Partners (THP).  Together with the Chief and Medical Director, you are accountable for the planning and delivery of high quality operations and professional practice in the Mental Health Program. You will play a crucial role in translating the THP strategy into the Mental Health Program as we envision a new approach to health care.  You will create and sustain effective and strategic partnerships to create an inter-connected system of care that is organized around the patient and family, both inside THP hospital and beyond its walls


Operations, Quality, Practice & Planning


  • Engages with an inter-disciplinary team of professional staff, clinicians, service providers and others to ensure delivery of exceptional quality Mental Health Services to the people in the community we serve
  • Supports the development and sustainability of integrated patient-centred programming across all THP sites that effectively manages transition to and from our community partner services
  • Monitors, oversees, and is accountable with the Medical Director for the fiscal operations of the Mental Health Program
  • Provides leadership and direction for the Mental Health portfolio management across the organization to achieve outcomes
  • Prepares proposals and business cases for entrepreneurial and innovative ideas that enhance all potential revenues and service cost effectiveness
  • In partnership with the chief & medical director, promote and support the research and education strategy at THP

Quality & Practice

  • Ensures systems are in place to monitor key process and outcome metrics related to each service portfolio within the Mental Health Program
  • Promotes and advances mental health best practices across programs at THP


  • Develops strategic alliances and partnerships with the business community and other referral sources and health programs
  • Leverages external relationships to ensure business/organizational interests are supported
  • Participates in various committees at the provincial, regional and local planning networks in advocating and advancing care for people with mental health challenges
  • Keeps current and provides updates on new Mental Health initiatives as they impact the strategic direction of the portfolio 



Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a health related field (e.g. Masters in Quality and Patient Safety, Masters in Health Administration, Masters of Nursing, Masters of Social Work, or similar)
  • Undergraduate degree in a clinical discipline

Experience & Key Competencies

  • 7+ years professional experience with progressive management experience
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that reflect a strong commitment to coaching, mentoring and the professional development of staff
  • Well-developed business management skills (strategic planning, budgeting, resource allocation and analytics)
  • Lean Six Sigma competence
  • Formal patient safety and quality improvement orientation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Results-oriented and patient-focused with a commitment to excellence
  • Superior analytical, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with a dynamic, professional team
  • Knowledge and understanding of the scopes of practices for all professions

Position Location and Travel

  • Travel amongst the Trillium Health Partners sites will be required
  • Travel to partner organizations required
