Position Summary

The Director of Performance Excellence is responsible for the oversight of a broad range of organizational quality and safety functions including: 

  • Enterprise Risk Management
  • Continuous Quality Improvement (i.e. Lean)
  • Quality Improvement Plan
  • Accreditation
  • Annual Corporate Planning
  • Patient Relations
  • Professional Practice for regulated and non-regulated health professionals
  • Clinical Informatics 

This position provides strategic and operational leadership to the organization and Performance Excellence team in order to achieve excellence in service performance in alignment with the Strategic vision and plan, current legislation and evidence base and applicable standards. The Director serves as an Advisor to the Senior Team, Management Team and as a support to the Quality and Safety Committee of the Board of Directors to ensure that the organizational mandate for quality is achieved.  

The Director works collaboratively with the management team, program and service teams, physicians and staff members to align corporate and program/department professional practice, quality improvement, patient safety and risk plans and to lead the development of a just and patient centered culture that supports continuous performance improvement



  • Masters Degree in health related discipline required
  • Current registration with Ontario Regulated Health Professional College required. 
  • Certification in continuous quality improvement, Lean (minimum Green Belt level), Six Sigma or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Project Management certification is preferred


  • Minimum five (5) years clinical experience in hospital setting is required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive management experience in professional practice, quality improvement, patient safety and/or risk is required.
  • Accreditation leadership experience an asset


  • Demonstrated knowledge of continuous improvement principles and practices, including Lean.
  • Demonstrated strategic and operational planning abilities and “out of the box” thinking and able to take prudent risks.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate effective working relationships with internal and external customers/stakeholders, including the ability to negotiate, resolve conflict and mediate in situations requiring tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor, analyze and evaluate complex statistical data, indicators and benchmarks. 
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate innovation and creativity.
  • Excellent working knowledge of current legislation (e.g. Excellent Care for All Act, Public Hospital Act, Mental Health Act, Quality of Care information Protection Act) 
  • Demonstrated experience with the Accreditation Canada process and knowledge related to application of standards and measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a cultural change agent
  • Excellent leadership skills and the ability to coach, mentor and motivate individuals and teams toward improved performance
  • Commitment to maintain a comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of laws, policies, standards or regulations and research.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, diplomacy, communication (written and verbal in English), critical thinking, attention to detail, presentation and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with proficiency in MS office suites, project and other appropriate computer programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, be self-directed, and participate/lead cross functional teams.
  • Demonstrated participatory leadership style which includes approachability, visibility and accessibility. 
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to appropriately delegate.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate, coach, mentor and lead individuals/groups to achieve performance targets and outcomes.
