Join our surgical leadership team and provide evidence-based and professional-oversight for In-patient and Ambulatory Surgical Services, delivering high-quality, safe care that meets the legal, regulatory, professional standards and best practices. 

 Humber River Hospital is committed to achieving consistently, high-quality, safe care for the diverse community we serve. We are seeking a dynamic, evidence-based administrator to serve as our Program Director, Surgical Services. This experienced clinical leader will be responsible for overseeing our vibrant programs including our Accredited Bariatric program, surgical clinics, In-patient surgical units, Acute Pain Services, Vascular Access team and other programs as assigned. The Program Director will work with other leaders to further Humber River Hospital’s strategic vision by achieving consistently, high-quality, safe care. Through collaboration and thought leadership, the Program Director, Surgical services is responsible for establishing and managing clinical practices and protocols, program development and evaluation, developing and implementing quality management initiatives and providing individual and group supervision.

Reporting Relationship: Vice-President, Clinical Programs
Hiring Salary Range: $140,349 - $157,884
Position Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Physician Chiefs and Physician Directors to develop and promote the strategic direction for Peri-operative services (i.e. vision, goals, and objectives) using evidence based best practices aligned with the hospital’s vision and strategic direction to meet legal, regulatory, and other priorities and requirements (e.g. LHIN and MOHLTC targets); evaluate impact of strategies on employees, the organization, and patients.
  • Develop annual operating plans aligned with hospital program/service plans and goals; consider opportunities and risks associated with proposed options; select courses of action with the highest probability of success.
  • Integrate clinical program functions, philosophy, process, policies with other program areas to improve patient care quality outcomes and patient/family experience (e.g. inter-program patient flow).
  • Plan service delivery growth; lead initiatives to acquire new or increased funding resources.
  • Develop business ventures based on market and business drivers; build on existing market strengths while balancing business risk (i.e. take calculated risks) to pursue new ventures; pilot and evaluate new patient care initiatives and processes.
  • Lead strategic planning activities in collaboration with the program leadership team to develop and implement performance indicators and continuous quality improvement processes (e.g. planning, quality monitoring, risk avoidance and mitigation) and action plans that improve quality and access for patients and the organization.
  • Set the program’s strategic direction in collaboration with Physician Director/Chief to support and promote the use of best practices.
  • Monitor and governs compliance with professional, accreditation, ethical, and legal standards.
  • Monitor and analyze performance and quality metrics against target outcomes for compliance with legal, regulatory, reporting, and policy requirements to identify trends and develop action plans (e.g. strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis).
  • Improve and support clinical and operational activities aligned with patient and staff satisfaction targets.
  • Master’s Degree in Health or Business Administration, Nursing or MSc in Nursing or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Current registration and membership in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Membership with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario
  • A minimum of (7) seven years of relevant clinical experience in acute care with strong experience a community based hospital.
  • A minimum of (5) five years management experience with direct people management responsibilities
  • Exceptional analytical and information-seeking skills that contribute to effective decision-making and strategic planning and execution of action plans that deliver results and motivate individuals for greater performance excellence
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of leaders and stakeholders with demonstrated success in moving key stakeholders to positive resolution and to facilitate and coach clinical areas on change initiatives
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in redesigning clinical processes to improve clinical practice, efficiency and patient care
  • Track record for creating a quality and safety culture and means for monitoring and communicating results that is meaningful to team members and inspires continuous improvement
  • Self-directed, courageous, and highly motivated with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience managing competing demands in a fast-paced, multi-site, multi-disciplinary health care environment
  • Demonstrated track record as a highly regarded contributor within a management team
  • Demonstrated strategic approach with evidence of change management capability
  • Exceptional interpersonal, facilitation and negotiation skills
  • Knowledge and ability to facilitate meetings, conduct effective briefings and presentations both internally and externally with stakeholders who reflect the full range of diverse objectives
