Job Description

Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) is a full service community teaching hospital serving the communities of Halton and Hamilton, including Burlington, Waterdown, Flamborough, Milton and Stoney Creek, with a skilled staff of 175 physicians, 1,500 full-and part-time staff and more than 600 volunteers. In conjunction with McMaster University, JBH is a Clinical Education Campus, and designated as an Academic Community Teaching Hospital. 

As part of a $450M redevelopment project, JBH recently opened  its new seven storey state-of-art Michael Lee-Chin & Family Patient Tower which features a new Emergency Department; 172 acute inpatient beds; 9 new Operating Rooms and a new post-anesthetic care unit; an expanded Diagnostic Imaging Department; expanded medical, surgical and outpatient services; expanded Cancer Clinic; expanded Intensive Care Unit; renovated Special Care Nursery, level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; an expanded and modernized laboratory; and 70 per cent single-patient rooms. As JBH continues this journey, there are several other planned milestones that will continue through 2018 and include additional renovations and upgrades. 

The IT Security and Network Specialist role is fundamental in ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of Joseph Brant Hospital information systems. This position will be a key contributor in setting the IT Security roadmap and future direction within the hospital.


  • Establish System Architecture Information and mapping of IT infrastructure standards;
  • Perform periodic and on-demand system assessments and vulnerability assessment; including user accounts, application access, file system and external Web integrity scans to determine compliance;
  • Direct the installation and configuration of security solutions including log monitoring, intrusion detection, Anti-virus, malware protection, data loss prevention, mail gateways and asset management applications, web filtering software and any additional security solutions;
  • Responsible for ensuring oversight of the installation and maintenance of the checkpoint firewall and antivirus systems;
  • Advise and support project teams defining security requirements, benefits, and technical strategy;
  • Manages security and operations activities within project from concept through to production;
  • Perform system audits as directed by Manager of Technical Services;
  • Contribute to and maintain security standards in line with InfoSec best Practice
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system security administration tasks;
  • Security monitoring to identify security breach including violations to standards / policies;
  • Lead all IT and information security related investigations as requested by line management;
  • Validates updates to firewalls, spam filters, routers and switches to secure the networking infrastructure have been implemented;
  • Responsible for monthly reporting of security incidents, risks and issues;
  • Co-ordinates and responds to security penetration testing and the management of vulnerabilities;
  • Maintain security administrative tools and utilities as required;
  • Maintain secure operational, configuration, or other procedures relating to systems security;
  • Ensure logs are recorded, managed and reviewed in line with group expectations;
  • Support Technicians, System Engineers and System Administrators when issues are outside of their scope of knowledge/experience;


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent Certification in Microsoft operating systems and networking;
  • Five (5) to Seven(7 )years’ experience in the System Administration;
  • Familiar with IT security and network standard and concepts;  
  • CISSP certification preferred but not required;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written;
