POSITION TITLE: ANESTHESIA ASSISTANT
COMPETITION NUMBER: 17-059
STATUS: Permanent Part Time
DEPARTMENT: Operating Room
REPORTS TO: Operating Room
HOURS: Weekends; 7.5 Hour Shifts

POSITION SUMMARY

A Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT) who has completed an accredited Anesthesia Assistant advanced program (AA) will provide anesthesia care and respiratory therapy to patients as directed by the Anesthesia Service at Mackenzie Health. This position will also provide technical and clinical support to Anesthesiologists and the Anesthesia Care Team in the Operating Rooms, Post Anesthetic Care Rooms and in other specialty areas of the hospital were anesthesia is practiced. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program required.
  • Registered with College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario required.
  • Enrolment or completion of an accredited Anesthesia Assistant (basic) program or equivalent education/work experience required.
  •  Certified in Basic & Advanced Cardiac Life Support, NRP required.
  •  Certified in PALS an asset.
  • Minimum two years’ experience as a RegisteredRespiratory Therapist (RRT).
  • Membership with the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario an asset.
  • Membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists an asset.
  • Proficiency in airway management and manual ventilation with and without an established advanced airway (ETT and or LMA/hypo-pharyngeal airway).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in intravenous line insertion and is responsible for establishing and maintaining IV access and administration of anesthesia care related medications.
  • Knowledge of CRTO standards of practice and a clear understanding of the application of the RHPA legislation.
  • Ability to work independently, self-directed and can effectively lead clinical inter-professional teams
  • Highly developed conflict resolution skills.
  • Well-developed ability to organize daily departmental activities and priorities.
